Forbidden & Chaos Tech Guide

Forbidden Tech and Chaos Tech are equippable artifacts in Star Trek Fleet Command that slot directly onto your ships, adding buffs on top of everything your research and officers already provide. The system covers 72 pieces: 43 Forbidden Tech, including the 12 [PRO] variants, and 29 Chaos Tech. This hub lists every piece with its rarity, what it is best at, and its main effect, each linked to a full guide with buff values, costs, and upgrade advice.

If you only want to know which piece to chase first, jump to the goal table below: it sorts the pieces by what your ship actually does, from hostile grinding and armadas to PvP, mining and travel.

How Forbidden Tech works

Each piece occupies a Forbidden Tech slot on a ship, unlocked with Fusion Rods. A piece has tiers and levels: tiering up with Tier-Up Catalysts raises the level cap and switches on additional buffs, while leveling up with Protomatter scales the buff values toward their maximums. Upgrades are attempts that consume Reactors, and Probability Devices improve the odds. Most pieces unlock through the Forbidden Tech refinery using Fragments of the matching rarity, which come from Q’s Trials and special rewards.

Fusion Rods also let you remove a piece from a ship later, so a piece is never locked to the first ship you put it on. If you end up with excess Forbidden Tech parts, you receive Forbidden Tech Credit Pieces, which you exchange for Forbidden Tech Credits in the refinery.

Forbidden Tech vs Chaos Tech

The two kinds share the same slot-and-upgrade system but run on separate currencies. Forbidden Tech uses the refinery currencies above. Chaos Tech has its own unlock and upgrade materials, earned in the Continuum and by defeating Assimilated hostiles. In practice the split matters for planning: your Forbidden Tech economy and your Chaos Tech economy progress independently, so you can push both at once.

On the Chaos Tech side, Chaos Tech Fusion Rods open Chaos Tech slots, Tier-Up Catalysts raise tiers, and Chaosmatter plus Chaos Tech Reactors pay for levels. The Continuum refinery and the Store supply the rods and catalysts, and Chaosmatter and reactors come from defeating Assimilated El-Aurian hostiles and exchanging their loot in the Continuum refinery.

Best Forbidden Tech for each goal

The best piece is the one whose buffs apply to what you do every day, since most buffs only work against one kind of target or on one kind of ship. This table groups the pieces by goal, using each piece’s own buff text.

Your goal Pieces built for it What they add
Grinding hostiles AGIMUS, Metreon Cascade Warhead, Agony Booth, The Godsend, Orion Seismic Charges Damage, piercing or Apex Barrier that only applies against hostiles
Hull-type defense against hostiles Control Seeker Probes (Explorer), Dual Photon Warheads (Interceptor), S31 Torpedo Pods (Battleship) Armor, Shield Mitigation and Dodge against hostiles for one hull type each
Group and solo armadas The Hull Piercer (Battleship), Druoda Sentient Missile (Explorer), Berserker Complex (Interceptor), Borg Nanoplating, Transphasic Torpedoes, Ceti Eel Isolytic Damage, Critical Hit chance or weapon damage against armadas
PvP Red Matter, Thalaron Radiation, Time Crystal, Tantalus Field, Q Cannon, Soran’s Trilithium Damage against players, hull health or Apex Barrier against players
Bergbau Tetracyanate 622, Klingon Mining Drill (Crystal), Malon Extractor (Gas), Romulan Mining Laser (Ore), [PRO] Harvester, Vinculum Mining rate or survey cargo
Travel Multiphasic Chamber, Quantum Slipstream Drive, [PRO] Orion Syndicate Bomb Warp range, and warp speed on the Multiphasic Chamber
One specific ship Genesis Device (SS Revenant), [PRO] Borg Operating Table und Interplexing Beacon (Borg Sphere), Mark VI Photon Torpedo (U.S.S. Reliant), Omega Molecule (U.S.S. Relativity), Particle Synthesis (Serene Squall) Buffs that only work on the named ship, so they are only worth it if you fly that ship

Ship-specific pieces are the easiest trap to fall into. Their numbers look large, but they do nothing on any other ship, so leave them alone until you own and fly the ship they name.

Translocator is the one Chaos Tech piece without its own guide yet. It is an Epic piece for the Ra’Ul Reaver: besides the Matter Array boost, it raises that ship’s Impulse Speed and, from tier 2, cuts its Repair Costs.

Wo du anfangen solltest

Match the piece to what you actually do every day. If you grind hostiles, start with AGIMUS and the other hostile-focused pieces, and pair them with the targets in our Feind-Guide. Miners get the fastest payback from cheap Common pieces like Tetracyanate 622. Armada crews should look at the Armadas column and our solo armadas guide. Rarity is a good proxy for both power and cost: Common and Uncommon pieces max out quickly, while Epics take months of materials and reward the investment.

Forbidden Tech FAQ

How many Forbidden Tech pieces are there in STFC?

There are 72 pieces in total: 43 Forbidden Tech, of which 12 are [PRO] variants, and 29 Chaos Tech. Rarity runs from Common to Epic, and most of the high-end pieces are Epic.

What is the best Forbidden Tech?

There is no single best piece, because every one is tied to an activity. Pick the piece that matches what your ship does all day: hostile pieces for grinders, the three isolytic armada pieces for armada crews, the damage-against-players pieces for PvP, and the mining pieces for survey ships. The table above groups them by goal.

What is the difference between Forbidden Tech and Chaos Tech?

Both slot onto ships and upgrade through tiers and levels. Forbidden Tech runs on Fragments, Fusion Rods, Tier-Up Catalysts, Protomatter and Reactors. Chaos Tech runs on Chaos Tech Fusion Rods, Tier-Up Catalysts, Chaosmatter and Chaos Tech Reactors, which come from the Continuum refinery and from defeating Assimilated El-Aurian hostiles.

Do [PRO] pieces upgrade the same way?

Not always. The [PRO] Borg Operating Table, for example, tiers up with Borg Plexus and levels up with Borg Cortical Subunits instead of the standard Forbidden Tech materials, so check each piece’s own guide before you plan its upgrades.
