Subnucleonic Beam is an Uncommon Forbidden Tech, a small artifact you slot onto a ship. Its main job is survivability: at the top end it raises the ship’s shield health by up to 200%, and it layers in extra critical-hit chance against Swarm and Dominion hostiles. The game files it under the Defense subtype. For a low-rarity piece, the shield boost is the real draw, which makes it a sensible early Forbidden Tech pickup for a defensive or grinding build.

What Subnucleonic Beam does

The headline buff is shield health. It switches on the moment you unlock the piece and scales all the way up as you tier and level it, ending at a large boost to the shield pool on whatever ship carries it. The two critical-hit buffs come later and are narrower: they only help when you fight Swarm or Dominion targets.

Buff Unlocks at tier Unlock value Max value
Increases Shield Health Stufe 1 10% 200%
Increases Critical Hit chance against Swarm hostiles Stufe 3 1% 8%
Increases Critical Hit chance against Dominion hostiles Stufe 4 1% 6%

In play, a maxed shield-health bonus means the ship soaks more damage before its hull is exposed, and the crit buffs give a modest damage bump specifically on Swarm and Dominion fights, so the piece pulls double duty as a defensive and anti-hostile part.

How to get Subnucleonic Beam

You unlock Subnucleonic Beam in the Forbidden Tech refinery using Uncommon Forbidden Fragments. Those fragments come from Q’s Trials and from special rewards, per the game’s own description. Before you can equip any Forbidden Tech, the ship needs an open Forbidden Tech slot, which you unlock with Fusion Rods; the same Fusion Rods let you remove a piece from a ship later. You can pick up more Fusion Rods in the Forbidden Tech refinery and the store.

Upgrading Subnucleonic Beam

Two tracks raise the piece. Tiering up costs Forbidden Tech Tier-Up Catalyst and raises the level cap, and it is what unlocks the later buffs: the Swarm crit buff turns on at tier 3 and the Dominion crit buff at tier 4. Leveling up costs Forbidden Tech Protomatter and scales the buff values inside the current cap. Both upgrade types are attempted with Forbidden Tech Reactors, and Probability Devices raise your chance of a successful upgrade.

Ebene Level cap Kosten
Stufe 1 5 Starting tier, no cost
Stufe 4 20 32 Forbidden Tech Reactor, 1,350 Tier-Up Catalyst
Stufe 6 30 32 Forbidden Tech Reactor, 750 Tier-Up Catalyst

Taking it all the way to tier 6 costs 160 Forbidden Tech Reactor and 4,650 Forbidden Tech Tier-Up Catalyst in total. Leveling it from 2 to 30 costs 896 Forbidden Tech Reactor and 38,450 Forbidden Tech Protomatter across all levels.

Best ships and uses for Subnucleonic Beam

Because the standout buff is shield health, Subnucleonic Beam belongs on a ship you want to keep alive: a defensive ship in a station-defense fleet, or the tanky ship in a hostile-grinding setup. The two crit buffs point it squarely at players who farm Swarm or Dominion hostiles, since that is the only place those bonuses do anything. If you spend a lot of time clearing those targets, this is a natural piece for that grinder’s ship. For crew and target planning around those fights, see the hostile guide. On any ship that never touches Swarm or Dominion, you are only getting the shield-health portion, which is still useful on its own.

Subnucleonic Beam in Star Trek

The Hirogen are a Delta Quadrant species from Star Trek: Voyager, a culture built entirely around the hunt, who tracked and captured prey across vast distances. Their technology in the show leaned on advanced sensors and disruption gear to run down quarry that tried to flee. The game leans on that identity here. Subnucleonic Beam is presented as Hirogen scanning technology that disrupts a target ship’s weapons and navigation, often paired with a tractor beam so a Hirogen Hunter can pin a vessel in place before boarding it. The specific device is the game’s own take rather than a single named weapon from the series, but the hunter framing sits right on top of established Hirogen canon.

Is Subnucleonic Beam worth it?

For an Uncommon piece, the up-to-200% shield-health buff is strong value, and it costs less to chase than higher-rarity Forbidden Tech. It is worth unlocking and leveling if you want a cheap survivability boost or you grind Swarm and Dominion hostiles. If you rarely fight those factions, treat it as a shield part and don’t over-invest past the point where the shield bonus stops mattering to your build.
