Ablative Armor is a Common Forbidden Tech in Star Trek Fleet Command that makes a ship harder to kill. It raises Hull Health from 5% at unlock to 100% at maximum, and a second buff does the same for Shield Health once the piece reaches tier 2. Doubling both pools is a large return for a Gemeinsame item, which makes this one of the easier early Forbidden Tech choices.
What Ablative Armor does
Two buffs, both defensive. The Hull Health bonus is live from tier 1, so the piece does something the moment you slot it. Shield Health comes online at tier 2 and then tracks the same curve. Nothing here touches damage, mining, or rewards; every point of value is survivability.
| Buff | Unlocks at tier | Unlock value | Max value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Increases Hull Health | 1 | 5% | 100% |
| Increases Shield Health | 2 | 5% | 100% |
Values are current as of the latest game Daten. The scaling is heavily back-loaded: Hull Health sits at 5% at level 1 and only reaches 23% by level 10, then climbs to 100% at level 20. Most of the payoff arrives in the last stretch of levels, so a half-upgraded piece feels underwhelming compared to a finished one. At maximum the ship carries twice the hull and twice the shields it started with, which changes what you can survive rather than what you can kill.
How to get Ablative Armor
Forbidden Tech is unlocked in the Forbidden Tech Raffinerie. Ablative Armor is Common, so it takes Common Forbidden Fragments, which come from Q’s Trials and from special rewards. You also need Forbidden Tech Fusion Rods, which open the Forbidden Tech slots on a ship and let you pull a piece back off later. Fusion Rods come from the Forbidden Tech refinery and the store.
Common Fragments are the cheapest entry point in the system, so this is a reasonable first piece to unlock while you are still learning how the refinery works.
Upgrading Ablative Armor
There are two separate tracks. Tiering up with Forbidden Tech Tier-Up Catalysts raises the level cap and switches on the Shield Health buff at tier 2. Leveling up with Forbidden Tech Protomatter scales both buffs toward 100%. Upgrades are attempts rather than guaranteed purchases: each one spends Forbidden Tech Reactors, and Probability Devices improve the odds of an attempt succeeding.
| Ebene | Level cap | Kosten |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 5 | Starting tier |
| 3 | 15 | 32 Forbidden Tech Reactor, 450 Tier-Up Catalyst |
| 4 | 20 | 32 Forbidden Tech Reactor, 500 Tier-Up Catalyst |
Reaching tier 4 costs 96 Forbidden Tech Reactor and 2,250 Forbidden Tech Tier-Up Catalyst in total. Taking the piece from level 2 to the level 20 cap costs another 576 Forbidden Tech Reactor and 13,230 Forbidden Tech Protomatter. Catalysts and Protomatter come from the Forbidden Tech refinery, Q’s Trials, and the store; Reactors come from Daily Goals and the store. Tier 2 is the milestone to hit first, since it doubles the number of buffs the piece is giving you.
Best ships and uses for Ablative Armor
Put it on whichever ship takes the most incoming fire. Both buffs are flat defensive percentages with no condition attached, so they apply against hostiles, in armadas, and in player combat alike. That makes Ablative Armor unusually flexible for a Common piece: a mining ship gains nothing from an offensive artifact, but everything that fights benefits from a deeper hull and shield pool.
The practical use is pushing into content that was previously killing you. Doubled health lets a grinding ship stay in a fight against higher-level targets long enough to finish them, and our hostile guide covers which targets are worth stepping up to. In armadas the same buffs keep you alive through the rounds where damage is heaviest.
Ablative Armor in Star Trek
Ablative armor is real Star Trek technology, not a game invention. Starfleet applied ablative hull plating to the Defiant-class in Deep Space Nine, where the material was designed to vaporize under weapons fire and carry the energy away from the hull underneath. Voyager went further in “Endgame”: Admiral Janeway brought back an ablative generator from the future that extruded a layer of armor over the ship’s exterior on Befehl, shrugging off Borg weapons that would have cut through shields. The game’s own description matches that idea, calling it armor that absorbs and dissipates energy weapons while doing less against physical attacks.
Is Ablative Armor worth it?
For most players, yes. It is Common, so the fragment cost to unlock it is the lowest in the system, and the ceiling of 100% Hull Health and 100% Shield Health is a real difference rather than a token bonus. Get it to tier 2 quickly for the second buff, then level it out when Protomatter allows. It will not win fights on its own, but it is cheap insurance on any ship you send into trouble.
