Schemes is an early Klingon story mission in Star Trek Fleet Command, recommended for level 3. The Klingons want you to spy on a Federation outpost, and the whole job runs at warp 1, so any starting ship can do it. There is no fight. The one real decision is what you tell the outpost, and that choice decides whether you walk away with Next Gen Troi shards or Next Gen La Forge shards. Both paths also pay 100 Tritanium.

Schemes objectives

The mission opens with two shared steps, then splits on a dialogue choice:

  • Travel to the Federation outpost.
  • What is your purpose here? This is the choice split.

The outpost asks why you are there, and you get two answers.

Tell the outpost you are spying for the Klingons

  • Return to the Station with your scans.

Rewards for this path: 100 Tritanium and 3 Next Gen Troi shards.

Lie about your intentions

  • Return to the Station with your scans.

Rewards for this path: 100 Tritanium and 3 Next Gen La Forge shards.

The objectives after the choice are identical. You fly home with the scans either way, so the only thing the answer changes is which officer’s shards you collect.

Where and what warp

Schemes needs warp 1 to start and warp 1 to complete. The Federation outpost has no named system in the objective, and the last step ends at your own station, so the trip is short. The recommended level is 3, which puts it among the first story missions a new player sees.

Schemes rewards

Choice Tritanium Officer shards
Tell them you are spying for the Klingons 100 3 Next Gen Troi
Lie about your intentions 100 3 Next Gen La Forge

Completing Schemes unlocks the next mission in the Klingon line.

Which choice to pick

Both officers are Common rarity Next Gen officers, and both need 3 shards to reach rank 1, so either path gives you exactly enough shards to unlock that officer at rank 1. The difference is the class. Next Gen Troi is a Science officer and Next Gen La Forge is an Engineering officer.

If you already hold one of the two, take the other. A new officer on the roster is worth more at level 3 than a few extra shards toward the next rank of one you have, and early crews are often short of bodies for the bridge.

If you have neither, pick based on what you plan to run. Engineering and Science officers both fill bridge seats, and the choice is small enough that it will not hold your account back.

Schemes and Crosshairs compared

Schemes comes after Recruitment Drive and leads into Crosshairs. Current game data for Schemes and the mission after it:

Mission Recommended level Warp Objective type Reward
Schemes 3 1 Travel and a dialogue choice 100 Tritanium and 3 officer shards
Crosshairs 3 1 Upgrade the Realta to Tier 3 3 Next Gen Data shards

Crosshairs also pays three Next Gen shards, so these two missions together can add two new officers to an early roster.

Tips

Take any ship. With no hostile to fight and a warp 1 route, even a starter hull is fine, and the mission is over as soon as the scans reach your station.

Spend the Tritanium straight away. At level 3 a hundred Tritanium is a small amount, but early building upgrades ask for it in small amounts too.

Line up the Realta upgrades before you finish Schemes, since Crosshairs asks you to tier that ship up to Tier 3. Other early missions by level are listed on the mission guide.
