Defense Technologies

The Defense Technologies building is your station’s defense-platform research lab in Star Trek Fleet Command. Each level raises the weapon damage your defense platforms deal, and from level 8 it also raises their armor, shield deflection, and dodge. It unlocks through the Defense Technology research at rank 1 and upgrades to level 80. If station defense matters to you, this building pays back every level you put into it.

What the Defense Technologies does

Defense platforms are the fixed weapons that fire on any hostile or player who attacks your station. The Defense Technologies building makes those platforms hit harder and survive longer. It carries two separate buffs, and both scale with the building’s level.

The first buff, Defense Platform Damage Bonus, starts at level 1 and increases the weapon damage of your defense platforms. The second, Defense Platform Defensive Bonus, starts at level 8 and increases the armor, shield deflection, and dodge of those platforms. Both climb steeply in the higher level bands, so the last stretch toward level 80 is where the numbers get large.

Buff Active from Value at anchor levels
Defense Platform Damage Bonus Level 1 1% at L1, 20% at L20, 50% at L50, 110% at L65, 250% at L70, 500% at L75, 750% at L80
Defense Platform Defensive Bonus Level 8 1% at L8, 44% at L20, 100% at L25, 178% at L50, 200% at L60, 750% at L80

These are current values from the latest game data. The damage bonus roughly tracks the building level through the mid-50s, then jumps once you pass level 60.

How to unlock the Defense Technologies

Defense Technologies is gated by research, not by another building. You unlock the level 1 build once you complete the Defense Technology research at rank 1. After that, higher levels bring in the usual station gates: Operations and the R&D Department through the early and middle levels, then the Science Lab and Engine Technology Lab, with the Foundry and Astronautics Studio at a few steps, from the mid-20s onward.

Upgrade costs and build times

Costs start trivial and end enormous. These milestone levels track the full climb to 80.

Level Cost Build time Requires
1 800 Parsteel 24s Defense Technology research 1
5 1,800 Parsteel 9m Operations 5, R&D Department 5
10 600 Tritanium, 7,000 Parsteel 1h 6m Operations 10, R&D Department 10
20 17,000 Tritanium, 144,500 Parsteel 18h 33m Operations 20, R&D Department 20
30 1.56M Tritanium, 13.26M Parsteel, 45 3★ Uncommon Refined Gas 1d 23h Operations 30, R&D Department 30, Astronautics Studio 29
40 120.4M Tritanium, 2.866B Parsteel, plus 4★ Refined Gas 32d 7h Science Lab 40, Engine Technology Lab 40
50 7.35B Tritanium, 125B Parsteel 553d 9h Science Lab 50, Engine Technology Lab 50
60 985B Tritanium, 40.19T Parsteel, plus 5★ Refined Gas 1,165d 22h Science Lab 60, Engine Technology Lab 60, Foundry 60
70 3.173M Σ-Tritanium, 26.97M Σ-Parsteel, plus 6★ Refined Gas 307d 12h Science Lab 70, Engine Technology Lab 70
80 387.3M Σ-Tritanium, 13.17B Σ-Parsteel, plus 7★ resources 7,423d 3h Science Lab 80, Engine Technology Lab 80

Across all 80 levels the building runs to about 114.2 trillion Parsteel and 2.763 trillion Tritanium, plus a long list of refined gas, ore, crystal, and the Sigma-resources (Σ-Parsteel and Σ-Tritanium) that the top levels demand. Build times dip at levels 65 to 70, where the Sigma-resource tier begins, then climb again toward level 80. The cumulative unboosted build time is roughly 40,665 days, so speedups and build-cost research do the real work at the high end.

How the Defense Technologies fits your station

This building only matters if your defense platforms see combat. Players who get attacked, hold territory, or keep a strong station defense will feel every level. Players who rarely get hit can leave it low and spend resources elsewhere. Because the early levels are cheap and fast, most commanders take it to a level that matches their Operations tier and then pause. The expensive middle and late levels are a deliberate investment for defense-focused accounts, not a default upgrade.

Watch the gates. Through the middle levels the building leans on your R&D Department and Operations; past the mid-20s it wants the Science Lab and Engine Technology Lab, so those need to keep pace or Defense Technologies stalls.

Is the Defense Technologies worth upgrading?

For a defensive or territorial account, yes, at least through the levels your platforms actually use. The damage and survivability buffs get large once the building climbs, and there is no other source for them. For a purely offensive player who almost never defends the station, it is a low priority past the cheap early levels. Match the level to how often your station is under fire, and let the cost curve tell you when to stop.
