The Mess Hall is a station building that raises your combat and economy stats a little more every time you upgrade it. It opens at Operations level 15 and climbs all the way to level 99. What sets it apart from most buildings is how you level it up: instead of waiting on another structure, each upgrade asks for a higher Crew Level, the combined levels of every officer you own. It is a slow, account-wide investment that pays off across your whole roster.

What the Mess Hall does

In the game’s own words, the Mess Hall is “the heart and soul of any station or ship,” the place crew members gather between shifts. Mechanically it works as a passive buff building. Every level you add strengthens four bonuses that apply to your entire account, not to a single ship or officer. Two of them help you fight, and two help you run your economy and research.

The four bonuses and where they land at a few milestone levels:

Buff Active from Level 25 Level 50 Level 75 Level 99
Weapon Damage Bonus (all ships) Level 1 64% 192% 489% 1,000%
Officer Stats Bonus (attack, defense, health of all officers) Level 1 70% 211% 538% 1,100%
Research Speed Bonus Level 1 99% 252% 459% 675%
Component Tritanium Cost Efficiency Level 1 40% 95% 191% 350%

These are current values from the latest game data. The weapon damage and officer stat bonuses make every ship you fly and every officer you crew hit harder and survive longer, which is why the Mess Hall pulls weight in both PvP and hostile grinding. The research speed bonus shaves time off the research tree, and the tritanium efficiency bonus lowers the tritanium you spend building ship components.

How to unlock the Mess Hall

The Mess Hall becomes available once your Operations building reaches level 15, so it arrives in the early-to-middle stretch of a station’s growth rather than at the start.

Placing the first level also requires a Crew Level of 150. Crew Level is the sum of the levels of all the officers you own, so recruiting and leveling officers is what opens the door here, not another building. Level 1 costs 100 Mess Hall Key, a one-off resource tied to the building’s introduction.

Upgrade costs and build times

After level 1, upgrades are paid in Replicator Rations, and each level also demands a higher Crew Level. The build times stay short in the early levels and then stretch into weeks and months as you climb. A sample of the milestone levels:

Level Cost Build time Requires
1 100 Mess Hall Key 35s Operations 15, Crew Level 150
10 2,100 Replicator Rations 1h 50m Crew Level 200
20 3,200 Replicator Rations 1d 1h Crew Level 350
30 4,700 Replicator Rations 3d 5h Crew Level 700
40 7,300 Replicator Rations 7d 20h Crew Level 1,250
50 10,600 Replicator Rations 30d 2h Crew Level 2,000
65 16,800 Replicator Rations 196d 18h Crew Level 3,450
80 25,100 Replicator Rations 370d 8h Crew Level 4,950
99 37,400 Replicator Rations 590d 6h Crew Level 6,850

Taking the Mess Hall from level 1 to level 99 costs 100 Mess Hall Key plus about 1.353 million Replicator Rations in total. The cumulative build time, with no speedups applied, runs to more than 15,500 days. In practice nobody sits and waits through that; you keep an upgrade running in the background while the timer ticks and use build-speed boosts when it matters.

How the Mess Hall fits your station

Treat the Mess Hall as a long-term background project rather than a race. Because every level buffs your whole account, there is no wasted progress: even a handful of early levels give you free weapon damage, sturdier officers, and faster research across the board. Those bonuses stack with your other buffs, so the Mess Hall quietly raises your ceiling in combat and in the research tree at the same time.

The Crew Level requirement is the pacing you actually feel. Since upgrades gate on the combined levels of all your officers, the Mess Hall rewards a broad roster rather than a few maxed captains. Leveling more officers, even ones you rarely crew, feeds directly into your ability to push the building higher. Once the per-level build times balloon past a few weeks, the sensible pattern is to always have the next level queued so the timer is never idle.

Is the Mess Hall worth upgrading?

Yes, and it is one of the easier calls in the game. The bonuses touch combat, officers, and research all at once, they apply to your entire account, and there is no downside to starting early. The catch is patience: high levels take real time and a large Crew Level, so think of the Mess Hall as a steady climb you never fully stop rather than a box you check off.
