Wachtmeister Otto

Who Otto is in Star Trek Fleet Command

Otto is an Uncommon Engineering officer in Star Trek Fleet Command and one of the Augments who served under Khan Noonien Singh. His captain ability adds damage against Defense Platforms, and his officer ability gives every officer on the bridge a flat Attack boost.

That pairing makes him a cheap, useful pickup for combat crews, and he earns most of his crew time through the bridge boost rather than the captain seat. Because he is an Uncommon officer, ranking him up costs far fewer shards than a rare or epic recruit, so newer and mid-game players can get real value from him without a long grind.

This guide walks through who Otto is in Star Trek lore, what his two abilities do, where he fits on a crew, how to rank him, and which Offiziere share his synergy.

Otto’s Star Trek background

Otto is a genetically engineered Augment from Earth’s 20th century and a survivor of the Eugenics Wars. He was one of Khan Noonien Singh’s followers, and he fled Earth with the rest of Khan’s people aboard the sleeper ship SS Botany Bay.

In 2267 the Botany Bay was found adrift by the USS Unternehmen. Otto was one of the 72 surviving male Augments from Khan’s original group of 84. He was later exiled to Ceti Alpha V along with Khan and the other survivors. Otto appeared in the original series episode “Space Seed” as a background member of Khan’s crew, without major dialogue of his own. The game fills in the rest: an Augment who was always among the physically strongest of Khan’s people, known for his aggression, and angry at having been used as leverage against Khan once the crew was revived.

Otto’s role in STFC

Otto is a combat officer with a specialist captain ability and a general-purpose officer ability. His Engineering class suits crews that lean on hull strength and steady damage rather than fast burst kills.

As a captain he is built around a single target type, the Defense Platform. As a bridge or below-deck officer he is far more flexible, because his ability raises raw Attack for the whole bridge. Most players use Otto for that second job far more often than the first, and treat him as a damage booster for attack crews.

Captain ability and officer ability

Captain ability: Smash the Defenses

When Otto captains a ship, Smash the Defenses checks the ship’s target at the start of every round. If that target is a Defense Platform, Otto increases the ship’s damage for that round. As of the latest Daten the bonus is 20% added damage against Defense Platforms.

This is a narrow ability. Defense Platforms are the turrets that protect player stations, so the captain bonus only matters when you are attacking a base or fighting content that fields those platforms. Against any other target the captain seat does nothing, which is why Otto usually rides below decks or as a bridge officer instead of taking the captain chair.

Officer ability: Brute Force

Brute Force works from the bridge whether or not Otto is captain. It increases the Attack of every officer on the bridge of the ship, and the bonus grows each time you promote him. Current per-rank values, as of the latest game data:

Rang Attack bonus
1 20%
2 30%
3 40%
4 50%
5 60%

Because the boost applies to the whole bridge rather than to Otto alone, it scales with whoever else you seat. On an attack-focused crew, a flat percentage added to three bridge officers’ Attack adds up fast, and that is the main reason to bring him along.

Where Otto shines

Three situations make Otto worth a crew slot.

The first is base attacking. If you raid player stations, Smash the Defenses adds damage against the Defense Platforms that guard them, so Otto in the captain chair clears those turrets quicker.

The second is any attack-leaning combat crew. Brute Force lifts the Attack of all three bridge officers, so Otto pairs well below decks under a captain whose ability you actually want firing. Hostile grinding and player-versus-player crews that care about raw damage both gain from the extra Attack.

The third is early and mid-game progression. Otto costs 400 shards to take from recruitment to max rank, which is light next to rare and epic officers. A newer player can rank him quickly and lean on Brute Force as a steady damage buff while stronger officers are still out of reach.

How to get Otto

Otto is an Augment officer, part of the group called Khan’s Crew. Officers in that group usually come from recruitment crates and from event or faction store rotations rather than one fixed source. Shard availability moves as the game cycles events, so check the current store and event rotations in your game to see where Otto shards are showing up.

Ranking Otto runs through five ranks, and the shard cost climbs with each promotion:

Rang Shards to promote
1 16
2 32
3 64
4 96
5 192

That adds up to 400 shards from recruitment through rank 5. The higher promotions also draw on officer experience and Engineering Badges, so budget those resources alongside the shards when you plan an upgrade.

Otto’s synergies

Otto carries a class synergy bonus that depends on the classes of the officers seated with him. It reads as a 10% bonus tied to Command officers, 5% tied to Engineering officers, and 10% tied to Science officers. When you build around him, mixing in Command and Science officers pulls a little more from that bonus than stacking Engineering alone.

He also has a named set of synergy officers, every one of them from Khan’s Crew. Seating Otto next to these officers activates their synergy bonuses:

A full Augment crew built around Khan and his lieutenants is the natural home for Otto, since every seat there can trigger synergy. Outside that group, judge Brute Force on its own and pair Otto with whatever attack crew you are running.

Frequently asked questions

Is Otto worth ranking up in STFC?

For a newer or mid-game player, yes. He is cheap to max at 400 shards, and Brute Force gives a clean Attack boost to the whole bridge. End-game players will usually own stronger officers, but Otto can still fill a below-deck slot on an attack crew.

Where do you get Otto shards?

Otto is a Khan’s Crew Augment officer, and his shards move through recruitment crates and event or store rotations. There is no single permanent source to rely on, so check the current event and faction store availability in your game.

What is Otto’s captain ability good for?

Smash the Defenses only adds damage when your ship fires on a Defense Platform. That makes it a base-attacking pick. If you are not hitting stations, run Otto below decks instead and let a different officer captain.

Who are Otto’s best synergy partners?

His synergy officers all come from Khan’s Crew: Khan Noonien Singh, Joachim, Joaquin, Kati, Navi, Rima, Marla McGivers, and Pan. An Augment crew built from that group gets the most out of his synergy.

What class is Otto?

Otto is an Engineering-class officer, which tends to suit crews that value hull and steady damage over burst.

Otto is a low-cost combat officer who earns his place through Brute Force more than through his captain ability. If you are working through the early or mid game, or you run Augment crews, he is an easy officer to rank up and keep in rotation. If what you mainly need is a captain, look elsewhere and save Otto for a below-deck Attack boost.
