What Toryn does in Star Trek Fleet Command
Toryn is an Epic Engineering officer added with Update 94, Cause and Effect. He sits in the Mirror Universe synergy group and carries no faction, which puts him in the Neutral pool alongside the other Mirror officers.
He is a specialist, and a narrow one. His Officer Ability changes what the Ra’Ul Reaver steals when it raids a player station, tilting the haul toward Sigma-Tritanium. His Below Decks Ability adds Critical Mitigation against players. Both of those are player-versus-player tools. If you do not raid stations with the Ra’Ul Reaver, most of Toryn’s value disappears.
The other thing to know up front: Toryn has no Captain’s Maneuver at all. Putting him in the captain seat does nothing. He is a bridge officer or a below-decks officer, never a captain.
Star Trek background
Toryn is an original character written for Star Trek Fleet Befehl rather than a face pulled from a series or film. There is no episode to go back and watch, so what follows comes from the game’s own dossier.
He is Andorian, and he left Andoria as a child. Fending for himself is how he learned the trade he now works in: dealing in antiquities, on the edge of what galactic law allows. The game describes him as an Independent who is as comfortable at the helm as he is arguing over the price of an ancient artifact. Some people call him a thief. He would tell you the word is reductive.
Toryn runs the Realta, an old ship he almost certainly did not buy through legitimate channels, and he moves cargo and occasionally people. His crew are three other misfits: Sesha, Kuron, and Elea. He leads them by default rather than by choice, and the game’s framing is that he would happily hand some of that responsibility to an Independent Commander who earns it. That is the hook for recruiting him.
The Andorian detail is worth holding onto, because it is the only piece of his backstory that shows up in his kit. His below-decks ability is called Andorian Resolve.
Role in STFC
Toryn is Episch rarity, Engineering class, with a maximum rank of five. His synergy group is Mirror Universe, which is the same group as Mirror Picard, Mirror Data, Mirror Kira, Mirror Ezri, Mirror Troi, Mirror Uhura, and Quasi.
Functionally he splits into two unrelated jobs. On the bridge he is a raiding officer whose only job is reshaping loot on one specific ship. Below decks he is a survivability officer for fights against other players. Very few crews want both at once, so most commanders will use him for one of the two and leave it there.
Captain ability: Chain of Command
Toryn’s captain slot is empty by design. The in-game text reads: “This Officer does not have a Captain’s Maneuver. Equipping this Officer as the captain of a ship provides no benefit.”
The synergy bonus table on his card confirms it. Engineering, Command, and Wissenschaft all read zero. There is no per-rank progression to chase from the captain chair and no class synergy to build a crew around.
That is a deliberate design pattern in STFC, not a bug. Several officers are built as ability-slot specialists with a blank captain seat. If Toryn ends up captaining a ship, swap him.
Officer ability: Tritanium Reaver
This is the reason Toryn exists. Tritanium Reaver increases the share of Sigma-Tritanium the Ra’Ul Reaver takes when it uses its Sigma Feast ability against an enemy station.
The mechanic matters more than the headline number. By default the Ra’Ul Reaver pulls Sigma-Parsteel, Sigma-Tritanium, and Sigma-Dilithium out of a target station in a 10:2:1 ratio, roughly a 77 / 15 / 8 split. Toryn does not raise the total amount taken. He re-weights it. Every rank pushes more of the same haul into Sigma-Tritanium and less into the other two.
The published ratio by rank, current as of the latest game data:
| Rang | Parsteel : Tritanium : Dilithium | Percentage split |
|---|---|---|
| Default (no Toryn) | 10:2:1 | 77% / 15% / 8% |
| Fähnrich I | 10:4:1 | 66.6% / 26.6% / 6.6% |
| Lieutenant JG II | 10:6:1 | 59% / 35% / 6% |
| Lieutenant III | 10:9:1 | 50% / 45% / 5% |
| Lt. Commander IV | 10:14:1 | 40% / 56% / 4% |
| Kommandant V | 10:22:1 | 30% / 67% / 3% |
The officer card also shows a rank bonus of 2,000, 4,000, 7,000, 12,000, and 20,000. That figure is the weighting value the game adds behind the scenes; the ratio table above is what you actually feel when the raid lands.
At rank five, Sigma-Tritanium goes from about fifteen percent of the haul to about two thirds of it. That is a large swing, and it only helps if Sigma-Tritanium is the resource holding you back. If you are short on Sigma-Parsteel instead, ranking Toryn actively works against you, because the Parsteel share drops from 77 percent to 30 percent.
Note the hard restriction: the ability is tied to the Ra’Ul Reaver. On any other ship, this ability does nothing.
Below decks ability: Andorian Resolve
Andorian Resolve increases Critical Mitigation against players. It fires only when Toryn sits in a below-decks slot, not on the bridge.
Values by rank, current as of the latest game data:
| Rang | Critical Mitigation vs players |
|---|---|
| Fähnrich I | 2,500 |
| Lieutenant JG II | 7,500 |
| Lieutenant III | 15,000 |
| Lt. Commander IV | 25,000 |
| Kommandant V | 50,000 |
Critical Mitigation is true mitigation. It applies after every other bonus has been calculated, and the in-game rule is that each 500 points cuts one percent off the critical damage you take. Run that against the rank five number and Toryn is absorbing a hundred percent of a critical hit’s extra damage in PvP, which is a real defensive contribution for a slot that costs you nothing on the bridge.
This is the half of Toryn’s kit that works on any ship. It is also the half most commanders will get more use out of.
Where Toryn shines
Three situations. First, Ra’Ul Reaver raiding when Sigma-Tritanium is your bottleneck. That is the intended use, and nothing else in the game does the same job.
Second, below-decks defense on a PvP ship. Andorian Resolve does not care about faction, hull type, or synergy group, so it slots into almost any player-combat crew that has a spare lower-deck seat.
Third, as a body in a Mirror Universe crew. He does not grant synergy himself, but he counts as a Mirror Universe officer when another officer from that group captains the ship.
Where he does not fit: hostile grinding, armadas, mining, and any ship that is not the Ra’Ul Reaver for bridge purposes. His bridge ability is blank in all of those cases.
How to get Toryn
Toryn recruits through the normal shard system. Total cost from recruitment through maximum rank is 1,800 shards, broken down as follows.
| Rang | Shards to promote | Running total | Max officer level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rank 1 | 120 | 120 | 5 |
| Rank 2 | 120 | 240 | 10 |
| Rank 3 | 240 | 480 | 15 |
| Rank 4 | 360 | 840 | 20 |
| Rank 5 | 960 | 1,800 | 30 |
Nearly half the total sits in the final promotion, which is normal for an Epic officer. Because his bridge ability scales so sharply at ranks four and five, a half-ranked Toryn on the Ra’Ul Reaver is not doing much. Commit or skip.
Where the shards come from moves with the calendar. As a launch officer for Update 94, expect him in arc events and event store rotations first. Check the current store and event rotations rather than planning around a fixed source.
Synergies
Toryn’s class synergy bonus is zero across Engineering, Command, and Science, because that bonus is delivered by a captain’s maneuver and he has none. Do not build a crew expecting synergy percentages from him.
His synergy group is Mirror Universe. The other officers listed in that group are Mirror Picard, Mirror Data, Mirror Kira, Mirror Ezri, Mirror Troi, Mirror Uhura, and Quasi. All of them show at zero percent on Toryn’s own card, again because the bonus flows from the captain seat he cannot fill. The practical read is that Toryn benefits from sitting under a Mirror Universe captain rather than the other way around.
Beyond that, treat crew building around him as a question of what the ship is doing. On the Ra’Ul Reaver, he is a loot-shaping passenger. Below decks on a PvP ship, he pairs with whatever your existing anti-player crew already runs.
Frequently asked questions
Is Toryn any good?
He is good at two narrow things and useless outside them. If you raid stations with the Ra’Ul Reaver and need Sigma-Tritanium, he is the only officer who does that job. If you fight other players, Andorian Resolve is a solid free defensive add from the lower deck. For hostiles, armadas, or mining, he contributes nothing.
Can Toryn be a captain?
No. Chain of Command is an explicitly blank captain’s maneuver. The game tells you outright that captaining him provides no benefit.
What ship is Toryn best on?
The Ra’Ul Reaver, for his Officer Ability. His Below Decks Ability works on any ship, so a second copy of the answer is “whichever ship you take into PvP.”
How many shards does Toryn cost?
1,800 shards in total to reach rank five, with 960 of those needed for the final promotion alone.
Does Tritanium Reaver increase how much you steal?
No. It changes the mix, not the size. The total Ressourcen taken from the target station stay the same; Sigma-Tritanium simply makes up more of them.
Worth chasing?
Toryn is a check on whether you are actually playing the part of the game he was built for. Commanders running the Ra’Ul Reaver against player stations, with Sigma-Tritanium as the resource slowing them down, get an officer with no substitute. Everyone else is looking at a below-decks Critical Mitigation stick that happens to be attached to an interesting Andorian. That second version is still fine, but it is not worth 1,800 shards on its own.
