Motivations is a Federation story mission in Star Trek Fleet Command in which you travel to New Vulcan to uncover the origins of Ensign Venonn. The game lists a recommended level of 1, it starts at warp 1, and it needs warp 75 to complete. You search for information on New Vulcan, mine 3,200 4★ Raw Crystal for the Vulcans, deliver it, and report to Starbase 87 in Holles. There is no fight. The reward includes 900 4★ Common Survey Parts and 80 4★ Uncommon Refined Gas.
Motivations objectives
There are four objectives and no choice split:
- Go to New Vulcan and search for information on Venonn. Location: New Vulcan.
- Mine 3,200 4★ Raw Crystal for the Vulcans.
- Return the mined Raw Crystal to New Vulcan. Location: New Vulcan.
- Return to Starbase 87 with the information. Location: Holles.
The Vulcans want crystal in exchange for what they know about Venonn. The mining step has no location attached, so you can mine wherever your ships can reach 4★ crystal. Once the crystal is back on New Vulcan, you take the information to Starbase 87.
Where and what warp
No pickup system is listed. The mission starts at warp 1 and needs warp 75 to complete. New Vulcan and Holles are the named systems.
The recommended level is 1. With no fight, warp 75 and the ability to mine 4★ Raw Crystal are the real requirements.

How it compares with other Holles missions
Several Federation missions run through Holles and pay 600 Federation Credits. Current game data:
| Mission | Warp to complete | Main task | Material rewards | Federation Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ceremony | 75 | Escort the graduating class to Earth and back | 1,485,000 Dilithium, 120 Premium Recruit Tokens | 311,000 |
| Last Orders | 95 | Nausicaan Raider fight, 8,100,000 Tritanium donation | 190 4★ Uncommon Refined Gas, 12 3 Hour Repair Speed Ups | 311,000 |
| Motivations | 75 | Mine 3,200 4★ Raw Crystal | 900 4★ Common Survey Parts, 80 4★ Uncommon Refined Gas | 538,000 |
Motivations pays the most Federation Points of the three, but also takes the most Klingon Points: 890,928 against 481,428 for the other two.
Tips
Use a survey ship. The mission has no fight, and its main task is mining, so a survey ship is the natural choice and the 900 Survey Parts go straight back into it.
Plan the mining around your survey fleet. 3,200 4★ Raw Crystal is a sizeable amount, and it then has to be carried back to New Vulcan, so a ship with a large cargo hold needs fewer trips.
Mind the Klingon penalty. Losing 890,928 Klingon Points is large, so weigh it if you are building Klingon standing. The mission before this one is Handover, and other missions by level are on the mission guide.
