Backfire is a Federation faction mission in Star Trek Fleet Command. An anti-Federation Corvallen militant is holding a human captive in the Benzite system, and Starfleet refuses to negotiate. The mission is picked up in Sol, needs warp 40 to start and warp 53 to complete, and ends with a fight against the Corvallen’s ship at roughly 1.37 million strength. The reward is 25 million Parsteel, 600 Federation Credits, 100,000 Federation Points and a Damaged Datapad, at the cost of Klingon and Romulan standing.
Backfire objectives
There are three objectives and no choice split:
- Talk to the Admiral to learn of the situation. Location: Alpha Centauri.
- Confront the Corvallen in orbit of Benzar. Location: Benzar.
- Disable the Corvallen’s ship. Location: Benzar. Enemy strength is roughly 1,373,877.
The briefing happens at Alpha Centauri, then you head to Benzar to confront the militant. Disabling the Corvallen ship is the last step, so the mission ends in Benzar with no trip home required.

The mission is picked up in Sol. Starting it needs warp 40, and completing it needs warp 53.
The game lists a recommended level of 1. For a warp 53 mission with a 1.37 million strength fight, that figure is not a useful guide. Plan around the warp and the Corvallen ship instead.

The Klingon and Romulan lines are losses. Finishing Backfire lowers Klingon standing by 154,800 and Romulan standing by 34,400.
How it compares with other Federation missions
Backfire is one of a group of Federation missions that each pay 600 Federation Credits, 100,000 Federation Points and a Damaged Datapad. Current game data for the others:

Backfire has only one fight, while Riposte has three, the toughest at around 2.1 million strength. A War on Two Fronts has two fights at roughly 1.39 to 1.43 million. Backfire is the lightest in combat but needs the most warp alongside A War on Two Fronts.
It is also the only one of the three that pays a large sum of Parsteel, and it costs slightly more Klingon and Romulan standing than the other two.
Tips
Check your range before you pick it up. Warp 40 gets you into Sol to accept the mission, but Benzar needs warp 53.
Bring your strongest combat ship to Benzar. The Corvallen ship is the only fight, and at around 1.37 million strength it is the one step that can stop you.
Weigh the faction swing. If you are building Klingon reputation, the -154,800 Klingon Points will set it back noticeably. Other missions sorted by level are on the mission guide.
