Mission The Die is Thrown

The Die Is Thrown is the fourteenth mission in the Augments story arc, and it centers on Khan and his experimental reactor. You track Khan down, feed his research with Dark Matter, bring the reactor online, then handle a Federation agent who has taken an interest in his work. The mission starts at Kor Na Ron and reaches out to warp 21 at its farthest point. The final step branches into two reward paths, and both hand you 200 Augment Points. Pick the fight if you want Parsteel, or walk away for a quicker clear and some Dilithium.

The Die Is Thrown objectives

Work through the mission in this order:

  • Rendezvous with Khan in Kor Na Ron.
  • Give Khan 3 Dark Matter samples.
  • Activate the reactor in Gealan.
  • Meet with the Federation Agent in Rigel.
  • Deal with the Federation Agent. This last step is where the mission splits into two paths.

The choice: deal with the Federation Agent

Once you reach the agent in Rigel, you decide how to handle the situation, and the two paths give different tasks and different rewards.

  • Destroy the agent. Take out the Federation Agent at Rigel, an enemy sitting at roughly 54,559 in strength, then report back to Khan on Kor Na Ron. This path pays the larger Parsteel and speed-up haul.
  • Walk away. Skip the fight and go straight back to speak with Khan on Kor Na Ron. This path pays a Dilithium reward instead.

Where and what warp

You pick the mission up around Kor Na Ron, a single warp from the mission giver, so getting started costs almost nothing. From there the objectives carry you through Gealan and Rigel, and the farthest jump reaches warp 21. Fuel a round trip to warp 21 before you commit, so you are not stranded mid-mission or forced to stop and refill on fuel. If your warp range tops out below 21, this is the leg to prepare for.

The Die Is Thrown rewards

What you collect depends on how you deal with the Federation Agent. Both paths award 200 Augment Points, so either way the mission moves your Augment total forward. The difference is the second reward attached to each choice.

Path Rewards
Destroy the agent 821,000 Parsteel, 5 x 8 Hour Speed Up, 200 Augment Points
Walk away 31,000 Dilithium, 200 Augment Points

Finishing The Die Is Thrown unlocks the next part of the Augments arc.

Tips

  • Stockpile 3 Dark Matter before you start. The reactor step stalls until you can hand it over, and scrambling for the resource mid-mission wastes time.
  • The destroy path throws a Federation Agent worth about 54,559 in strength at you. Bring a combat-ready ship and crew if you want the 821,000 Parsteel and the speed-ups.
  • If you only care about progressing the arc, the walk-away path still gives the full 200 Augment Points and adds 31,000 Dilithium without a fight.
  • Both endings send you back to Khan on Kor Na Ron, so your choice changes the loot, not where you finish.
  • Plan around the warp 21 leg. It is the one part of this mission that can catch a lower-warp player off guard.
