Target Practice

Target Practice is a level 4 story mission in Star Trek Fleet Command in which you run Maia’s core program through combat maneuvers. It needs only warp 1 to start and to complete. You defeat 4 hostiles of level 4 or higher, then choose your next target: an Orion Slaver for 500 Parsteel and 5 1★ Explorer Parts, or 3 more hostiles for 700 Parsteel. Either way it unlocks the next mission, Versions. It is a short combat mission with a small choice at the end.

Target Practice objectives

The story line reads: improve Maia’s core program by running her through combat maneuvers. The shared objectives come first:

  • Defeat 4 Hostiles of Level 4 or higher.
  • Choose your next target.

Path 1: the Orion Slaver

  • Defeat the Orion Slaver. Enemy strength about 272.

Rewards for Path 1: 500 Parsteel and 5 1★ Explorer Parts.

Path 2: more hostiles

  • Defeat 3 Hostiles of Level 4 or higher.

Rewards for Path 2: 700 Parsteel.

Where and what warp

Warp 1 to start and warp 1 to complete. No system is named for any objective, so any hostiles of level 4 or higher near your station count.

The recommended level is 4. The hostiles only need to be level 4 or above, and the Orion Slaver is listed at about 272 strength, so a starting ship can handle either path.

Target Practice rewards

Reward Path 1 (Orion Slaver) Path 2 (3 hostiles)
Parsteel 500 700
1★ Explorer Parts 5 None

Either path unlocks Versions.

Choosing a target

Path 1 is one fight against a single named target. Path 2 is three more ordinary hostile kills. The rewards differ by 200 Parsteel against 5 Explorer Parts.

If you are flying an explorer and want to tier it up, the 5 1★ Explorer Parts are the more useful reward. If you just need Parsteel for your next station upgrade, Path 2 pays more of it.

Path 1 is also the quicker of the two, since one kill finishes it. The Orion Slaver page covers that hostile type.

Neither choice changes the story. Both paths lead to Versions, and the rest of the early missions carry on the same way.

Tips

Clear the first 4 hostiles close to your station. Any of level 4 or higher count, so pick the nearest ones.

The mission before this one is Negotiations, which pays 25 Ship XP. Versions, the next one, is a level 5 mission that pays 1,750 Parsteel. Other early missions are on the mission guide.
