Nothing Comes for Free is a Federation story mission in Star Trek Fleet Command where you carry out a task for a Klingon captive in exchange for information on Venonn. It starts at warp 1 and needs warp 120 to complete. The game lists a recommended level of 1, but level 46 hostiles and Tavahk at roughly 5,773,328 power set the real bar. The reward is 17 1M Tritanium Tokens, 800 4★ Common Explorer Parts and Federation rewards, and finishing it unlocks Handover.
Nothing Comes for Free objectives
There are five objectives and no choice split:
- Return to Starbase 87 and check in on the Klingon captive. Location: Holles.
- Go to Ballion and look for the Romulan Centurion. Location: Ballion.
- Defeat 6 hostiles of Level 46 or higher.
- Defeat Tavahk. Location: Ballion. Enemy strength is roughly 5,773,328.
- Return to Starbase 87. Location: Holles.
You start at Starbase 87 in Holles with the Klingon captive, then head to Ballion to find the Romulan Centurion. After clearing six level 46 hostiles (any system counts), you defeat Tavahk in Ballion and return to Starbase 87.
Where and what warp
Nothing Comes for Free is available from warp 1 and needs warp 120 to complete. Holles and Ballion are the named systems.
The listed recommended level of 1 does not match the content. Tavahk at about 5.8 million power and level 46 hostiles call for a strong late-game ship.
Nothing Comes for Free rewards
| Reward | Amount |
|---|---|
| 1M Tritanium Token | 17 |
| 4★ Common Explorer Parts | 800 |
| Federation Credits | 600 |
| Federation Points | 448,000 |
| Klingon Points | -725,760 |
Completing the mission also unlocks the next one in the storyline, Handover.
The Klingon loss of 725,760 points is larger than the Federation gain. Check your faction reputation before you commit if Klingon standing matters to you.
How it fits the storyline
The storyline begins with Chaperone, where you escort Starfleet Academy cadets from Starbase 87, and Pieces of the Puzzle comes directly before this mission.
| Mission | Warp to complete | Main fight | Main rewards |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chaperone | 110 | Orion Slaver, about 1,969,977 | 29 4★ Rare Refined Gas, 110 4★ Uncommon Refined Gas |
| Nothing Comes for Free | 120 | Tavahk, about 5,773,328 | 17 1M Tritanium Tokens, 800 4★ Common Explorer Parts, Federation rewards |
Both missions start and end at Starbase 87 in Holles. The step up in difficulty is large: Tavahk is almost three times as strong as the Orion Slaver.
Other fights at the same strength
Enemies at about 5,773,328 also appear in Combat Training 46: Veteran, where the hostile captain is listed at the same strength. If your ship has cleared that step, it is ready for Tavahk.
Tips
Clear the six level 46 hostiles near Ballion, then repair before Tavahk.
Keep the 800 4★ Common Explorer Parts for an explorer you are upgrading. Other missions sorted by level are on the mission guide.
