Gavolar’s Wager is an early Star Trek Fleet Command mission in which you confront Gavolar, a Nausicaan bounty hunter. It is recommended for level 3 and needs only warp 1 to start and to complete. You consult Toryn about an ancient artifact, track Gavolar down and defeat him in a fight at roughly 272 strength. The reward is small: 20 Recruit Tokens, 15 Ship XP and a 3 Minute Speed Up. It is a quick early fight and moves the story on.
Gavolar’s Wager objectives
There are three objectives and no choice split:
- Consult with Toryn about the ancient artifact.
- Track Gavolar’s position.
- Defeat Gavolar. Enemy strength is roughly 272.
None of the three objectives names a system in the current game data. The first is a conversation with Toryn, the second has you follow Gavolar’s trail, and the third is the one fight. Once Gavolar is beaten, the mission is complete; there is no final trip back to your station.
Where and what warp
Gavolar’s Wager needs warp 1 to start and warp 1 to complete, so any ship you own at this stage can reach every step. The recommended level is 3, so this is one of the game’s early missions.
Gavolar’s Wager rewards
| Reward | Amount |
|---|---|
| Recruit Token | 20 |
| Ship XP | 15 |
| 3 Minute Speed Up | 1 |
Completing Gavolar’s Wager also unlocks the next mission in the chain.
How hard is Gavolar?
At roughly 272 strength, Gavolar sits in the same range as the scripted targets in other low-level missions. For comparison, from the current game data:
| Mission | Recommended level | Scripted target | Strength |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hunting the Hunter | 2 | The witness’ ship | about 162 |
| Tithe of Honor | 3 | Orion Saboteur or Federation Science Vessel | about 221 |
| The Hunt | 3 | Klingon traitor | about 230 |
| Gavolar’s Wager | 3 | Gavolar | about 272 |
| A Matter of Honor | 4 | Dissident ambush | about 669 |
Gavolar is the toughest of the level 3 targets in that list, though well below the Dissident ambush in A Matter of Honor. He is about 40 points stronger than the Klingon traitor in The Hunt, so a ship that only just scraped through that fight should be repaired and, if possible, upgraded before it takes on Gavolar.
Tips
Send your best combat ship, even this early. Gavolar is the only thing standing between you and the reward, and a first ship that has not been upgraded may need a repair before the fight.
Use the 3 Minute Speed Up on a timer with only a few minutes left, so it finishes the job outright.
The 20 Recruit Tokens go toward recruiting officers, which you will want for filling your first ship’s crew slots.
The other early missions in the table are Hunting the Hunter, Tithe of Honor, The Hunt and A Matter of Honor. Every mission by level is on the mission guide.
