TMP Hikaru Sulu in STFC: abilities, role, and best uses

Why TMP Hikaru Sulu matters in STFC

TMP Hikaru Sulu is an Epic Command-class officer from The Motion Pictures group, drawn from Sulu’s run as captain of the USS Excelsior. His kit pushes you into one specific lane: surviving longer against non-Armada hostiles up through level 81, with a critical hit kicker when those targets are debuffed.

If you build crews for hostile grinding or for clearing player outposts and retaliation targets in that band, he is worth a closer look. If you mostly fight high-level armadas or top-tier PvP, his window does not cover that space.

Star Trek background

Hikaru Sulu spent most of the original five-year mission on the bridge of the USS Enterprise as chief helmsman under James T. Kirk. By the Motion Picture era he had moved into more senior roles, and in 2287 he assumed command of the USS Excelsior.

His three-year mission as Excelsior captain cataloged gaseous anomalies in the Beta Quadrant. On the return trip in 2293, Excelsior detected the Praxis shockwave that touched off the Klingon peace crisis. Sulu disobeyed orders to back Kirk’s rescue of McCoy from Rura Penthe, then brought Excelsior to Khitomer in time to help the Enterprise-A defeat General Chang’s prototype Bird-of-Prey and arrest the conspirators behind the plot. He remained in command of Excelsior until 2320.

His Excelsior crew included Commander Janice Rand at communications and a young Ensign Tuvok at science. His daughter Demora later took her father’s old post at the helm, this time on the Enterprise-B. Off duty Sulu was known for fencing, hot tea, and a real love of botany.

Role in STFC

TMP Hikaru Sulu is a Command officer who specializes in hostile and outpost combat. The hooks are narrow but specific: a damage-mitigation captain ability that only triggers on certain target types, and an officer ability that adds critical chance when those same target types are debuffed.

That makes him a fit for two playstyles. Grinders who farm hostiles at or below level 81 for parts and faction reputation get extra survivability. Crews built around applying states (Burn, Hull Breach, Morale Break, and similar) get a critical chance lift on top of whatever damage payload they already carry.

Captain ability: Master of This Vessel

As captain, Sulu adds 2,000 Apex Barrier for 10 rounds against non-Armada hostiles, outposts, and retaliation hostiles up through level 81 (rank 1 value, as of the latest data). Apex Barrier is true damage mitigation that applies after every other defense calculation. Every 100 Apex Barrier reduces the damage you would take by 1%, so 2,000 from a single source is meaningful survivability in the right fight.

Two limits to flag. The bonus does not trigger if Tal is on the bridge of the same ship. The captain ability also scales across ranks in a way the public game data does not cleanly publish, so plan around the rank 1 value when you crew him and check the in-game officer page for the current rank-up values.

Officer ability: Don’t Call Me Tiny

When TMP Sulu is in an officer slot on the bridge, he increases your ship’s critical hit chance at the start of each round for 4 rounds, as long as any state is applied to a qualifying target (non-Armada hostile, outpost, or retaliation hostile). The bonus scales with his rank; the in-game officer page is the right place to see the current rank-by-rank percentages.

“Any state” is what gives this ability range. If your ship’s weapons or another bridge officer apply Burn, Hull Breach, Morale Break, or another debuff to the target, Sulu’s window opens. Pair him with officers whose job is to land states, and the crit bonus shows up almost every fight he is eligible for.

Where he shines

  • Mid-level hostile grinding for parts and faction reputation, where targets sit at or below level 81 and his Apex Barrier is in play.
  • Outpost takedowns during territory and station-warfare events, since outposts count as qualifying targets.
  • Retaliation hostile farming when you have the daily attempts to spend, again inside the level 81 cap.
  • Crit-leaning crews where another officer reliably applies a debuff state to the target. The more often a state is up, the more Sulu’s officer ability pays out.

He is not the pick for armada combat — the captain ability explicitly excludes Armada targets — and he loses ground in PvP against ships above level 81.

How to get TMP Hikaru Sulu shards

The Motion Pictures group officers rotate through STFC’s event calendar, faction stores, and recruit pools rather than coming from a single fixed source. Check the current event schedule, the Federation faction store, and any active officer-themed events for shard offers. Officer recruit tokens may also produce shards depending on the active recruit pool.

If you do not see him in any current rotation, that is normal for The Motion Pictures officers. Players usually pick up shards in bursts during themed events rather than as a daily drip.

Shard costs by rank

Promoting TMP Sulu through the standard officer ranks costs the following shards (per rank, not cumulative):

Rank Shards to promote
1 120
2 120
3 240
4 360
5 960

Total shards from recruitment through max rank: 1,800.

Synergies and crew building

TMP Sulu belongs to The Motion Pictures officer group, which provides class-based synergy bonuses when other officers from that group sit in supporting bridge or crew slots. The exact Command, Engineering, and Science percentages depend on his rank and his current in-game synergy values, so check the synergy display in-game when you build the crew.

For a Sulu captain seat, a useful pattern is one debuff applicator in the bridge officer slots so his critical hit window opens reliably, plus damage-leaning crew slots so the crit chance has something to amplify. Another Motion Pictures officer in the crew slots can add to the group synergy bonus on top.

Frequently asked questions

Is TMP Hikaru Sulu worth ranking up?

If you grind hostiles or outposts at or below level 81, yes. His captain ability scales the Apex Barrier value with promotion, so each rank-up directly increases the damage you can soak. If your activity sits in armadas or PvP against high-level fleets, his ceiling is lower.

What ship is TMP Sulu best on?

He works on any ship that fits the hostile or outpost grind you are running. A battleship or interceptor that already matches your target type tends to be the most natural home, with an officer slot free for the debuff applicator that triggers his critical hit bonus.

Does Sulu work in armadas?

No. The captain ability text excludes Armada hostiles, and the officer ability’s crit chance trigger requires a state on a non-Armada target. For armada crews, pick a different captain.

How does Apex Barrier interact with shield hit points?

Apex Barrier is separate from shield HP. It applies after every other damage calculation, reducing the final incoming damage by 1% per 100 Apex Barrier. That is especially useful in fights where the target hits hard enough to chew through your shields anyway.

Is Tal a problem in a Sulu crew?

Yes. Tal on the bridge of the same ship cancels Sulu’s captain ability. Keep Tal and TMP Sulu on different ships.

The bottom line

TMP Hikaru Sulu is a focused tool. He pays off in the level 81 and under hostile and outpost lane, and he is not pretending to do anything else. If you live in that lane and you can land a debuff state on your targets, ranking him up directly improves both your survival and your damage output. If your activity is armada or top-tier PvP, slot him for the group synergy bonus and pick a different officer for the captain seat.
