What Trelane does in Star Trek Fleet Command
Trelane is an Epic Command officer added with Update 94, Cause and Effect, the arc he also drives as the story antagonist. He carries no faction, so he lands in the Neutral pool, and his synergy group is Strange New Worlds.
His kit is unusually focused. Both of his abilities are defensive, and both of them only work in Wave Defense. His Captain’s Maneuver adds base Shield Mitigation at the start of combat. His Officer Ability adds base Apex Barrier. Outside Wave Defense, Trelane does nothing at all.
That single restriction decides whether he is worth your shards. If Wave Defense is a mode you run regularly, he is one of the most direct survivability officers available for it. If you never touch it, he is a collection piece.
Star Trek background
Trelane is canon, and he has been for a long time. He first appeared in the original series episode “The Squire of Gothos” in 2267, played by William Campbell, and returned in Strange New Worlds in the episode “Wedding Bell Blues,” played by Rhys Darby.
He is a Q, and a young one. Gothos is an artificial planet he built and lives on, roughly 900 light years from Earth, and he uses it as a stage. When the Enterprise passed through, he pulled Sulu and then Kirk off the bridge and into a manor he had constructed, then held the landing party as guests while he performed the role of a retired general. He accepted the title “squire” happily.
His obsession is eighteenth-century Earth: the Age of Sail, military tradition, aristocratic manners. Because Gothos is so far from Earth, the light reaching him is centuries old, so everything he imitates is out of date. That is the joke the episode keeps returning to. His food has no flavor and his fireplace gives off no heat.
His powers are real but limited by Q standards. He converts matter to energy and back, restructures objects almost instantly, blocks scans and communications around his planet, and once taught Uhura to play the harpsichord with a wave of his hand. He cannot reliably manipulate minds or falsify computer records, and much of his ability depended on a machine hidden behind a large mirror in his manor. Kirk worked that out and shot the mirror during a duel, which stripped most of it away.
The episode ends with his parents arriving as two glowing shapes, calling him disobedient and cruel and taking him home. Strange New Worlds later established that he was 8,020 years old at the time of an earlier encounter, youthful for a Q, and cast John de Lancie as the voice of his father. That is as close as the shows have come to confirming what fans had assumed for decades about the relationship between Trelane and Q.
The STFC version leans on the same reading: enormous power in the hands of someone who has not yet learned what to do with it. In Update 94 he breaks the timeline while experimenting with a time vortex, and the Protocol Origin mission line has you repairing the damage with the help of Maia, the Temporal Cartographer.
Role in STFC
Trelane is Epic rarity, Command class, with a maximum rank of five. He has no Below Decks Ability, so he uses either the captain seat or a bridge officer slot and nothing else.
His job is survivability in Wave Defense. Shield Mitigation from the captain chair reduces the damage that gets through your shields at the moment combat opens. Apex Barrier from the officer slot is true damage mitigation that applies after everything else has been calculated. Between the two, he is trying to keep your ship alive deeper into a wave, not help you clear it faster.
Nothing in his kit touches hostiles outside Wave Defense, armadas, mining, PvP, or station defense.
Captain ability: General of Gothos
General of Gothos increases your ship’s base Shield Mitigation by 10 percent on combat start during Wave Defense. That value is current as of the latest game data.
Two details matter. First, it fires on combat start rather than building each round, so you get the full benefit immediately and it does not stack up over a long fight. Second, the ability card states plainly that it does not gain synergy group benefits. Every class row on his synergy table reads zero: Command, Science, and Engineering alike. Filling the bridge with Strange New Worlds officers under a Trelane captain will not raise this number.
Because the ability does not scale meaningfully with rank in the way most captain maneuvers do, the rank-one value is the number to plan around. Do not expect the captain half of Trelane to grow as you promote him.
Officer ability: Child’s Play
Child’s Play is the half of Trelane that rewards ranking up. It increases your ship’s base Apex Barrier during Wave Defense, and it activates when he is assigned to the bridge.
Values by rank, current as of the latest game data:
| Rank | Apex Barrier in Wave Defense |
|---|---|
| Ensign I | 5,000 |
| Lieutenant JG II | 12,000 |
| Lieutenant III | 22,000 |
| Lt. Commander IV | 35,000 |
| Commander V | 50,000 |
Apex Barrier is true damage mitigation from all sources, applied after every other bonus. The in-game rule is that each 100 points of Apex Barrier increases the damage you can absorb by one percent. At rank five that works out to a 500 percent increase in the damage your ship can take during a wave, which is why this ability is the reason to chase him rather than the captain’s maneuver.
There is one exclusion written into the ability: Child’s Play does not trigger when Tal is assigned to the bridge of your ship. If you already run Tal in a Wave Defense crew, you cannot simply add Trelane next to him and collect both.
Where Trelane shines
Wave Defense, and specifically the deeper waves where incoming damage is the thing ending your run. Apex Barrier at rank five is a large amount of true mitigation for a single bridge seat, and it is not competing with damage output because it costs you nothing offensively.
He also works as a captain in Wave Defense if you have no better option for that seat, since 10 percent Shield Mitigation on combat start is free value. In practice most commanders will want a captain whose maneuver scales, and will use Trelane in an officer slot instead.
Where he does not fit: everywhere else. Hostile grinding, armadas, PvP, mining, and station defense all fall outside both abilities.
How to get Trelane
Trelane recruits through the standard shard system. The full path from recruitment to maximum rank costs 1,800 shards.
| Rank | Shards to promote | Running total | Max officer level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rank 1 | 120 | 120 | 5 |
| Rank 2 | 120 | 240 | 10 |
| Rank 3 | 240 | 480 | 15 |
| Rank 4 | 360 | 840 | 20 |
| Rank 5 | 960 | 1,800 | 30 |
The last promotion alone costs 960 shards, more than half the total, and it is also where Child’s Play makes its biggest jump. A rank-three Trelane gives you 22,000 Apex Barrier; a rank-five gives you 50,000. The gap is large enough that partially ranking him is a poor use of shards.
As a launch officer for Update 94, he showed up first through arc content and event rotations. Check the current store and event rotations for where his shards are available now.
Synergies
Trelane’s class synergy bonus is zero for Command, Science, and Engineering. That is not a data gap. General of Gothos is explicitly written to exclude synergy group benefits, so there is no class-based bonus to build a crew around.
His synergy group is Strange New Worlds, which is a large one: SNW Christopher Pike, SNW Spock, SNW La’an Noonien-Singh, SNW Una Chin-Riley, SNW Nyota Uhura, SNW Erica Ortegas, SNW Hemmer, SNW M’Benga, SNW Nurse Chapel, SNW Sam Kirk, SNW James Kirk, SNW Pelia, S31 Georgiou, SNW Montgomery Scott, SNW T’Pring, SNW D’Chok, SNW Black Ops M’Benga, and SNW Black Ops Chapel. All of them read zero percent on Trelane’s card for the same reason.
What this means in practice is that Trelane is a passenger in the synergy system. He can help fill a Strange New Worlds crew for another captain from that group, but he never generates the bonus himself. Build the rest of the Wave Defense crew on its own merits and treat Trelane as a flat block of Apex Barrier.
The one pairing rule to remember is negative rather than positive: keep Tal off the bridge, or Child’s Play will not fire.
Frequently asked questions
Is Trelane any good?
In Wave Defense, yes. 50,000 Apex Barrier at rank five is a large amount of true mitigation from one bridge slot. Outside Wave Defense he is worth nothing, so his value depends entirely on how much of that mode you play.
Does Trelane have a below decks ability?
No. He has a Captain’s Maneuver and an Officer Ability only. There is no lower-deck slot use for him.
Why do all of Trelane’s synergy percentages show zero?
Because General of Gothos is written to exclude synergy group benefits. The zeros are correct, not a display error.
What is the Tal restriction on Child’s Play?
Child’s Play does not trigger when Tal is assigned to the bridge of your ship. The two officers cannot be stacked on the same bridge for this effect.
How many shards does Trelane cost?
1,800 shards in total to reach rank five, with 960 of those spent on the final promotion.
Worth chasing?
Trelane is one of the cleanest yes-or-no officers in the game right now. Run Wave Defense seriously and he is a straightforward survivability upgrade, worth ranking all the way to five because that is where the Apex Barrier number lives. Skip Wave Defense and he sits in your roster doing nothing, no matter how good the character is. Decide which of those you are before spending 1,800 shards.
