Space Race is a Federation mission in Star Trek Fleet Command where you help Starfleet claim a valuable new discovery before the Romulans get to it. You pick it up in Barnard’s Star at warp 40, fight a Romulan Centurion in Nekosa, and report back to Admiral Johnson. The whole mission needs warp 40 and has three objectives. The reward is 444,000 Dilithium, 240 3★ Explorer Parts and a block of Federation reputation. The game lists a recommended level of 1, but the Centurion at about 2.1 million strength is the real requirement.
Space Race objectives
Three objectives, no choice split:
- Go to the Nekosa system. Location: Nekosa.
- Defeat the Romulan Centurion. Location: Nekosa. Enemy strength is roughly 2,104,711.
- Return to Admiral Johnson. Location: Barnard’s Star.
The structure is simple. You fly from Barnard’s Star to Nekosa, beat the Romulan Centurion that is racing you for the discovery, and return to Admiral Johnson in Barnard’s Star. There are no hostile kill counts and no donations, so the Centurion fight is the entire challenge.
Where and what warp
Space Race is picked up in Barnard’s Star, and both starting and finishing it need warp 40. Nekosa is the only other system involved, so the mission is one round trip from the pickup point.
The recommended level shows as 1. A Romulan Centurion at roughly 2.1 million strength will beat an underpowered ship regardless of that number, so judge readiness by your ship against that fight.

The reputation lines work in opposite directions. You gain 100,000 Federation Points and lose 147,600 Klingon Points, so the mission moves you toward the Federation and away from the Klingons.

The three fights sit within a narrow band around 2 million strength, so a ship that clears one will clear the others. Space Race is the one to run if you want Dilithium and Federation standing; the other two pay in Parsteel or Tritanium and carry no reputation change.
Tips
Only take Space Race if you are happy to lose Klingon standing. The 147,600 Klingon Points penalty is larger than the Federation gain, which matters if you are trying to stay neutral.
Bring a proper combat ship to Nekosa. The Centurion is the whole mission, and losing that fight means another flight out at warp 40.
The 240 3★ Explorer Parts are only useful for explorer upgrades. If you do not fly an explorer, the Dilithium and Federation Credits are the parts of this reward that matter.
