Mara Dalen in STFC: abilities, role, and FCM crew

Mara Dalen at a glance

Mara Dalen is an epic Science officer in Star Trek Fleet Command and the third piece of the First Contact Movie (FCM) Armada crew. Scopely introduced her in Update 89 alongside the rest of that team, and her job on the bridge is simple: keep an Armada ship alive against the Isolytic damage that Group Armadas throw out.

Her main appeal is the Officer Ability, Right to Protest, which boosts Isolytic Defense against Group Armadas. At max rank, the bonus is +1000% Isolytic Defense against Group Armadas (as of the latest data). Pair her with Zefram Cochrane and FCM Data and you have the strongest Group Armada crew currently in the game.

If you grind Armada content, especially Open Armadas in the Veil, Mara Dalen is built for you. If you do not run that content, she is a low-priority pick.

Star Trek background

Mara Dalen is original to STFC. She does not appear in any Star Trek series or film. Scopely built her as a Maverick faction colony defender, and the in-game flavor text frames her as the founder of the Mavericks, a band of Independent colonists who push back against pirates, warlords, and slavers when no larger faction will step in.

The “First Contact Movie” tag on her card is a story group inside STFC that ties her to the TNG: First Contact event arc rather than a literal appearance in the 1996 film. If you read her flavor text, treat it as game lore, not Trek canon.

Role in STFC

Mara Dalen is a Science class officer at epic rarity. Her bridge value is narrow on purpose: she is an Armada specialist, and outside Armada content she does not have much to offer.

Inside Armada content she does two jobs at once. The Officer Ability tanks Isolytic damage from Group Armadas. The Below Deck Ability, Defy Defeat, repairs Shield Health at the start of every round against any Armada type. So even when she is not on the bridge, she can sit below decks and keep shields ticking back up.

Captain ability and officer ability

Captain’s Maneuver: Chain of Command

Mara Dalen has no functional Captain’s Maneuver. Her card lists “Chain of Command,” but the in-game description reads “This Officer does not have a Captain’s Maneuver. Equipping this Officer as the captain of a ship provides no benefit.” Do not put her in the captain seat. She is meant for the officer slot or below decks.

Officer Ability: Right to Protest

Right to Protest increases Isolytic Defense against Group Armadas. At max rank the bonus reads +1000% Isolytic Defense against Group Armadas (as of the latest data). The bonus scales with promotion, so most of her ceiling sits at rank 5.

This is the only place in the game where you get this much Isolytic Defense scoped specifically to Group Armadas, so the ability matters most against Open Armadas in the Veil and other Group Armada content that leans on Isolytic damage.

Below Deck Ability: Defy Defeat

Defy Defeat repairs Shield Health at the start of each round against all Armada types. Two things matter here. First, it works against any Armada type, so her below deck slot is useful on a wider range of Armada ships than her Officer Ability is. Second, the heal triggers at the start of every round, which is a cleaner uptime pattern than abilities that depend on a hull breach, low HP, or a critical hit.

Where Mara Dalen shines

Mara Dalen has a narrow but strong job. Three situations to think about:

  • Open Armadas in the Veil. The developers point to this as the headline scenario for Right to Protest, and it is the cleanest use case. Isolytic Defense is the relevant stat, and Mara stacks it higher than any other current officer.
  • Group Armada content broadly. Anywhere a Group Armada is part of the fight, Right to Protest helps you survive longer rounds.
  • Any Armada ship that needs more shield uptime. Even when she is not on the bridge, Defy Defeat below decks keeps shields healing each round.

Outside Armada content she is a bench piece. There is no PvP, hostile-grinding, or mining role that picks her over a dedicated officer for that lane.

How to get Mara Dalen

Mara Dalen is an epic officer, so getting her to rank 5 takes 1,500 shards total. The promotion costs run 100, 100, 200, 300, and 800 shards per rank.

Scopely has rotated FCM Armada crew shards through event rewards and recruit token offers tied to the TNG: First Contact arc and follow-up events. Where exactly they appear shifts every few weeks, so the simple advice is to check the current store and event rotations before chasing her. Do not assume any single source will still be there next month. If she is on offer in a recruit pack, that is usually the fastest path. Otherwise, the faction store and Armada-themed event tracks are the fallback.

Synergies and the FCM Armada crew

Mara Dalen sits in the “First Contact Movie” story group with FCM Data and Zefram Cochrane. With full synergy on the bridge, the three of them are the strongest current Armada crew in the game, and that is the setup to plan for.

Roles inside the trio:

  • FCM Data as captain. The Captain’s Maneuver “Plexurus of Borg” provides a 200% shot increase that stacks twice, reaching 400% from round 2 onward (as of the latest data). Scopely says this beats the older Dajash Tolra plus Miles O’Brien setup, which tops out at 300% from round 2.
  • Zefram Cochrane as officer. At rank 5, his Officer Ability “Let’s Rock’n’Roll” provides 250% Armada Isolytic Cascade damage, which is higher than Gwen DeMarco’s 150% in the same slot.
  • Mara Dalen as officer. Right to Protest adds Isolytic Defense against Group Armadas, which is unique to this crew and the reason it is named the FCM Armada crew.

The 1337wiki page for Mara Dalen carries no published class-synergy line yet, and the public data feed does not expose Command/Engineering/Science percentages for her synergy group in a way we can confirm against a second source. Read the class-synergy bonuses off her card in-game until that data is confirmed.

Outside the FCM trio, do not improvise mixed Armada crews around her. Her Officer Ability only fires against Group Armadas, so any partner you pair her with for Armada content should be doing real work in that same lane.

Character traits

The public data feed does not list named traits or per-level XP costs for Mara Dalen at this time, so any trait-related guidance here would be guesswork. Use the trait card in-game as the source of truth and check it before you commit XP. This section will be updated when reliable trait data is available.

Frequently asked questions

Is Mara Dalen worth chasing?

If you actively run Group Armadas, especially Open Armadas in the Veil, yes. She is the only officer in the game that piles +1000% Isolytic Defense against Group Armadas (as of the latest data). If you do not run that content, she will sit at low rank and you will not miss her.

Can I use Mara Dalen as captain?

No. Her Captain’s Maneuver “Chain of Command” is a placeholder with no effect. Put her in the officer slot or below decks instead.

What is the best crew for Mara Dalen?

FCM Data as captain, with Zefram Cochrane and Mara Dalen as the two officers. The trio is designed around the three of them, and the developers position it as the new top Armada crew.

Where do you get Mara Dalen shards?

Check the current event and faction store rotations. She has come through event arcs tied to TNG: First Contact and through recruit-pack offers in the same window. Exact availability shifts often, so it is not safe to commit to a single source.

How many shards do I need to max Mara Dalen?

1,500 shards total from recruit to rank 5. The promotion costs run 100, 100, 200, 300, and 800 per rank.

Bottom line

Mara Dalen is the missing piece of the FCM Armada crew. Right to Protest gives you the strongest Group Armada Isolytic Defense currently in the game, and Defy Defeat below decks adds shield healing across any Armada type. If you grind Open Armadas or other Group Armada content, she earns her shards. If you do not, leave her at low rank and put your shards on officers who push your day-to-day play instead.
