In the Open is a Romulan faction mission in Star Trek Fleet Command that sends you into Romulan military space in Ardaji. The game lists a recommended level of 1, but you need warp 120 to finish it, 15 kills of level 44 or higher hostiles, and a win against a Romulan Lieutenant at roughly 6.39 million strength. It pays 18,225,000 Tritanium, 800 4★ Common Interceptor Parts and 448,000 Romulan Points.
In the Open objectives
There are four objectives and no choice split:
- Go into Romulan Military space. Location: Ardaji.
- Defeat 15 Hostiles of Level 44 or higher.
- Defeat the Romulan Lieutenant. Location: Ardaji. Enemy strength is roughly 6,389,135.
- Return to your Station.
You start by entering Ardaji. The kill count comes next and has no system attached, so any level 44 or higher hostile counts toward it. After that comes the one scripted fight, the Romulan Lieutenant, and then the trip home.
Where and what warp
There is no pickup system, and the mission becomes available at warp 1. Completing it takes warp 120, the range needed for Ardaji.
The recommended level is listed as 1, which is not a useful guide here. A ship that can reach warp 120, clear level 44 or higher hostiles, and beat a 6.39 million strength target is what the mission really asks for.

The negative Federation Points line lowers your Federation standing by 483,840 while the Romulan Points raise your Romulan standing. Completing the mission also unlocks the next mission in the chain.
In the Open and the next mission
In the Open follows The Student and leads into Unbreakable. Both this mission and the next need warp 120, so the jump you make here is the same one you will need again.

Unbreakable pays more Romulan Points and a large Parsteel reward, so finishing In the Open is worth it for the unlock as well as for its own rewards.
Tips
Clear the kill count before you go looking for the Lieutenant. The objective order puts the 15 hostiles first, and the Romulan Lieutenant is the hardest part of the mission, so you want to arrive for that fight fully repaired.
Treat 6.39 million as the real test. That is the strength your ship needs to handle. If your combat ship struggles against level 44 hostiles, it will struggle more against the Lieutenant.
Weigh the faction cost. The 483,840 Federation Points loss is sizeable. If you are working toward a Federation reputation tier, factor that in before you run a string of Romulan missions.
