Breen Energy Dampener

The Breen Energy Dampener is a Rare Forbidden Tech built around hostile grinding, and most of its power is pointed at the Mantis. Its headline effect raises Armor, Shield Mitigation, and Dodge against hostiles from 100% at unlock to 1,000% at max, and it pays out extra Actian Venom on Mantis runs. If the Mantis is part of your daily routine, this is one of the better Rare pieces to chase.

What Breen Energy Dampener does

Survivability is where this piece earns its slot. The Armor, Shield Mitigation, and Dodge buff applies to hostiles generally, not only to Mantis targets, so it keeps working across your whole grind. The other three effects are narrower: two of them only apply while you are flying the Mantis, and the fourth adds cargo space so you spend less time flying back to station. Values below are current as of the latest game data.

Buff Unlocks at tier Unlock value Max value
Increases Actian Venom rewards on Mantis 1 10% 30%
Increases Armor, Shield Mitigation, and Dodge against hostiles 3 100% 1,000%
Increases Critical Damage against hostiles on Mantis 6 30% 150%
Increases Cargo capacity 8 120% 280%

In practice a maxed Dampener means your grinder takes less damage per hostile, kills faster on the Mantis, and hauls more before it has to dock. That combination cuts the number of repairs and return trips out of a grinding session, which is usually worth more per hour than raw damage alone.

How to get Breen Energy Dampener

Forbidden Tech is unlocked with Forbidden Fragments in the refinery, and this piece uses the Rare tier of those fragments. Rare Forbidden Fragments come from Q’s Trials and from special rewards, then get exchanged in the refinery. Excess Forbidden Tech parts convert into Forbidden Tech Credit Pieces, which you exchange for Forbidden Tech Credits in the refinery, so nothing you pull is wasted.

Having the piece is only half of it. You also need somewhere to put it. Forbidden Tech slots on your ships are opened with Forbidden Tech Fusion Rods, and the same Fusion Rods are what you use to pull a piece back off a ship later. Fusion Rods come from the Forbidden Tech refinery and the store. Plan your slots before you commit one, because moving a piece costs rods you could have spent opening a new slot.

Upgrading Breen Energy Dampener

Two upgrade tracks run in parallel. Tiering up raises the level cap and switches on the later buffs at the tiers listed in the table above, so the Dampener does not become a complete piece until tier 8. Leveling up scales the values of whatever buffs are already active. Tier 12 and level 60 are the ceiling.

Tier Level cap Cost
1 5 Starting tier, no cost
7 35 32 Forbidden Tech Reactor, 4,200 Forbidden Tech Tier-Up Catalyst
12 60 32 Forbidden Tech Reactor, 4,900 Forbidden Tech Tier-Up Catalyst

Reaching tier 12 costs 352 Forbidden Tech Reactor and 57,000 Forbidden Tech Tier-Up Catalyst in total. Taking it from level 2 to level 60 costs 1,856 Forbidden Tech Reactor and 475,975 Forbidden Tech Protomatter.

Reactors are the shared bottleneck across both tracks. You spend them to attempt an upgrade, and they come from Daily Goals and the store, which makes daily pickup the thing that actually sets your pace. Catalysts and Protomatter come from the Forbidden Tech refinery, Q’s Trials, and the store. Probability Devices raise the chance an upgrade attempt succeeds, so save them for the expensive later tiers rather than burning them on early ones you can afford to retry.

Best ships and uses for Breen Energy Dampener

Two of the four buffs name the Mantis directly, so that is the obvious home for this piece. The Actian Venom bonus and the Critical Damage bonus do nothing on any other hull, which means slotting the Dampener anywhere else throws away half of what you paid for.

The survivability buff and the cargo buff are not Mantis-locked, so a Dampener parked on a general hostile grinder still does real work if your Mantis is not your main farming ship. That is the fallback, not the plan. For where to point the ship once it is fitted, see our hostile guide.

Breen Energy Dampener in Star Trek

The Breen energy dampening weapon is canon, and it is one of the nastier surprises of the Dominion War. When the Breen entered the war on the Dominion side in Deep Space Nine’s final season, they deployed a weapon that drained the energy systems of Federation and Klingon ships, leaving whole squadrons dead in space with no power, no weapons, and no shields. It turned the Second Battle of Chin’toka into a rout and cost the Alliance most of its fleet in that engagement. Starfleet eventually developed a countermeasure, with Klingon ships proving easier to adapt than Federation ones, but the weapon defined the Breen as a threat for the rest of the war.

The game’s version keeps the flavor of an unstable device that suppresses enemy energy systems, and it notes the same drawback the Breen never fully solved: it burns an enormous amount of power to run.

Is Breen Energy Dampener worth it?

Yes, if you fly the Mantis. Two buffs are locked to that ship and the Actian Venom bonus feeds straight back into Mantis progression, so Mantis owners get full value and everyone else gets roughly half. It is Rare rather than Epic, which keeps the fragment cost reasonable, so a Mantis pilot should push it to tier 8 for the full buff set and then level it as Reactors allow.
