A Sterling Example

A Sterling Example is a Borg-era story mission in Star Trek Fleet Command in which you bring Yara back to Starfleet and appeal for their help against the Borg. The game lists a recommended level of 1, it starts at warp 1, and it needs warp 25 to complete. The route runs between Lainey and Roda Alpha, with 8 hostiles and the USS Sterling at roughly 293,839 strength to beat. The reward is 351,000 Tritanium and 71,000 Dilithium, and it unlocks House Rules.

A Sterling Example objectives

There are seven objectives and no choice split:

  • Bring Yara back to Starfleet on Jihao. Location: Lainey.
  • Investigate the last known location of the Starfleet cadets. Location: Roda Alpha.
  • Defeat 8 hostiles in Roda Alpha. Location: Roda Alpha.
  • Rendezvous with the cadet’s vessel. Location: Roda Alpha.
  • Defeat the USS Sterling. Location: Roda Alpha. Enemy strength is roughly 293,839.
  • Return the Starfleet Academy cadets to Jihao. Location: Lainey.
  • Return to your Station.

Jihao is the Starfleet world in Lainey where the mission begins and where the cadets end up. The middle of the mission happens in Roda Alpha: a search, eight hostile kills in that system, the rendezvous and then the fight with the USS Sterling.

Where and what warp

No pickup system is listed. The mission starts at warp 1 and needs warp 25 to complete. Lainey and Roda Alpha are the two named systems, and you pass through Lainey twice.

The recommended level is 1. The USS Sterling at roughly 293,839 strength, eight hostiles in Roda Alpha and the warp 25 finish are the real requirements.

A Sterling Example rewards

Reward Amount
Tritanium 351,000
Dilithium 71,000

Completing it unlocks the next mission, House Rules.

How it compares with the missions around it

A Sterling Example follows Reverse Engineering, and after House Rules comes Empire of Ashes. Current game data:

Mission Warp to complete Main challenge Rewards
Reverse Engineering 18 Harvest and donate 5,000 Inert Nanoprobes 2,504,000 Parsteel, 74,000 Dilithium, 18 3★ Uncommon Refined Crystal
A Sterling Example 25 8 hostiles, USS Sterling (about 293,839) 351,000 Tritanium, 71,000 Dilithium
Empire of Ashes 20 Romulan Guard and Assimilated Valdore (about 293,839 and 296,419) 1,661,000 Parsteel, 245,000 Tritanium

A Sterling Example has the highest warp of the three. Its fight with the USS Sterling matches the Romulan Guard in Empire of Ashes almost exactly in strength, so a ship that wins here is ready for that mission too.

Tips

Clear the eight hostiles in Roda Alpha. Unlike many hostile objectives, this one names the system, so plan to fight there rather than at your usual spot.

Repair before the Sterling. The fight comes after the hostile grind and the rendezvous, so your ship may already be damaged when it arrives.

The return home ends the mission at your Station, so you can repair and move straight on to House Rules. Other missions sorted by level are on the mission guide.
