Who is Icheb in Star Trek Fleet Command
Icheb is a Rare Voyager officer added to Star Trek Fleet Command with the Year of Hell arc. He is a defensive PvP support specialist whose abilities only fire when your opponent is suffering from Hull Breach.
If you fight other players in battleships and like building around the Hull Breach state, Icheb is a useful piece of the puzzle even though he is not a captain. His value goes up sharply when you stack him with the other Year of Hell officers, who can apply Hull Breach for him to feed off of.
This guide covers his canon background, how he behaves in STFC, his two abilities, where he fits best, and the crew context that makes him pay off.
Star Trek background
Icheb was a young Brunali male who first appeared in Star Trek: Voyager as one of five adolescent drones rescued from a derelict Borg cube. His own people had genetically engineered him from birth to carry a Borg-killing pathogen, then sent him to be assimilated as a deliberate act of sabotage against the Collective. The Voyager crew freed him, removed his implants, and gave him a path back to individuality.
On Voyager he became a gifted astrophysics student and worked in the astrometrics lab. Seven of Nine took the lead in his recovery and effectively raised him as a younger brother. He repaid that bond by offering part of his cortical node to save her life when her own began to fail.
By the time Voyager returned to the Alpha Quadrant, Icheb wanted to apply to Starfleet Academy. The Year of Hell arc in STFC picks up that thread and casts him as a young Starfleet hopeful pulled back into a Krenim conflict alongside his old crewmates.
Role in STFC
Icheb sits in the Voyager bench as a Rare officer built around three game systems that the Year of Hell arc leaned on: Hull Breach, Apex Barrier, and Isolytic Cascade. His job is not to deal damage himself. He boosts your survival and your isolytic output while another officer triggers the Hull Breach state on the enemy.
That makes him a battleship PvP support card by design. He has no Captain’s Maneuver and no PvE-focused ability, so he does not belong on hostile-grinding, mining, or armada crews. Treat him as a slot you bring when you know you will fight other players in a battleship.
Captain ability and officer ability
Icheb does not have a Captain’s Maneuver. Putting him in the captain seat gives no buff, so always put another officer there.
Officer ability: Protective Instinct
When you fight a player whose ship has Hull Breach, every hit you land adds Apex Barrier to your own ship for the next four rounds. The trigger fires once per weapon per round, so high-shot-count battleships stack barrier faster than low-shot ones. The size of the barrier grows as you rank Icheb up, with the largest jump at his final rank, current as of the latest game data.
Below-deck ability: Purity of Will
Slot Icheb below decks and you get a different effect. On round start against a player, if your ship has no applied states, you gain an Isolytic Cascade damage boost for three rounds. The bonus also scales with his rank. Two things matter here: it only fires versus players, and only if your own ship is clean of states at the start of the round. You cannot rely on it round-over-round once the opponent has hit you with anything sticky.
Where Icheb shines
Icheb works best in three situations.
- Battleship PvP against an opponent who is, or quickly will be, Hull Breached. The barrier stack lets you eat several rounds of return fire while a heavier captain delivers the kill.
- Arena and territory fights inside the Year of Hell ecosystem, where Hull Breach, Apex Barrier, and Isolytic Cascade are the shared currency. Icheb pulls double duty there as both barrier source and isolytic amplifier.
- Mixed battleship crews that already run Hull Breach appliers. He extends the value of a Hull Breach win condition without taking the captain slot.
He is a poor pick for hostile grinding, station defense without a Hull Breach plan, Borg or armada content, mining, and any explorer or interceptor build.
How to get Icheb shards
Icheb launched with the Year of Hell arc and was tied to a free-unlock event in his debut month. Outside that launch window, his shards rotate through normal Voyager-arc channels: the Event Store, Faction stores, Recruit Tokens, and the Alliance and Artifacts stores during related events. Drop rates and current event availability shift as new arcs roll out, so check the active event and store rotations in your game rather than relying on a fixed source.
Synergies and crews
Icheb was designed to share a ship with Specialist Seven of Nine and Infiltrator Tuvok. That trio is the Battleship Retaliation Team introduced in the same patch. Specialist Seven, as captain, applies Hull Breach to your target on round start, which is exactly the condition Icheb needs. Infiltrator Tuvok then turns the Hull Breach state into stacking Isolytic Cascade damage. Run that combo on a battleship and you get a feedback loop where Seven sets up the state, Tuvok turns hits into isolytic ramp, and Icheb pads your hull with barrier every hit.
Outside that lineup, any captain or officer who reliably applies Hull Breach to a player target opens Icheb up. If your alliance leans on a different Hull Breach captain for arena or territory, Icheb still fits.
Character traits
The game frames Icheb as a hopeful, recovering Borg drone rather than an aggressive combatant, so his ability kit pushes protective utility and Isolytic Cascade support rather than direct damage. Specific in-game trait names and XP costs change with patches, so check the in-game trait panel for the current per-level costs.
Frequently asked questions
Is Icheb worth ranking up?
Yes if you fight battleship PvP and have, or plan to build, a Hull Breach crew. His barrier gain and his isolytic buff both improve at higher ranks, and his final rank is a meaningful jump from the previous one. If you do not fight players or you skip the Year of Hell arc systems, his value drops fast.
Does Icheb need to be captain?
No. He has no Captain’s Maneuver. Put a Hull Breach applier such as Specialist Seven of Nine in the captain seat, slot Icheb in an officer slot or below decks depending on which ability you want, and crew the rest around your battleship of choice.
What ships pair best with Icheb?
Any battleship you intend to fly into PvP. Higher shot counts compound his per-hit Apex Barrier gain, so survivability-focused battleships with steady hit cadence get more out of him than low-shot, single-strike builds.
Is Icheb the same as Icheb Retaliation Squad?
No. They are two separate officer cards from two different patches. The base Rare Icheb on this page is the Year of Hell, Part 1 Voyager officer. The Retaliation Squad version is a later, distinct card with its own ability text and its own shard pool. If you are looking for that variant, search the Retaliation Squad page instead.
Does Icheb work in PvE?
Both of his abilities are scoped to fights versus players, so he is not a hostile or armada crew choice. Run a different officer for PvE.
Bottom line
Icheb is a niche officer with a clear job. If you build battleship crews that lean on Hull Breach, he adds real survivability and isolytic punch from the officer or below-deck slot. If you do not run Hull Breach setups, he can sit on the bench until you do.
