Who is Gwen DeMarco in STFC
Gwen DeMarco is an epic Science officer added to Star Trek Fleet Command during Update 69, the Galaxy Quest crossover. She comes from the 1999 film of the same name, where Sigourney Weaver played her. In STFC she has one job, which is also the name of her ability: she buffs Isolytic Cascade damage against the toughest PvE targets in the game.
If you do not run armadas, invading entities, or PvP fights against opponents with active states, she sits on the bench. If you do, she is one of the more focused Isolytic Cascade buffers in the Galaxy Quest officer group, and she stacks with the rest of that crew for higher damage in those fights.
She is not a captain. Her card lists a Captain’s Maneuver called “Chain of Command” with the description “This Officer does not have a Captain’s Maneuver. Equipping this Officer as the captain of a ship provides no benefit.” Slotting her into the captain chair gives the ship nothing. Use her on the bridge, or more often, below deck.
The Galaxy Quest character
Gwen DeMarco is not from Star Trek canon. She is a character from Galaxy Quest, a 1999 DreamWorks satirical sci-fi comedy that parodies and pays tribute to Star Trek and its fans. In the film, the cast of a cancelled 1980s space-adventure show is pulled into real interstellar combat by an alien race called the Thermians, who have no concept of fiction and believe the old episodes are documentaries.
Inside that fiction, DeMarco played Lieutenant Tawny Madison, the NSEA Protector’s communications officer. Madison’s job on the show was to repeat what the ship’s computer just said, a role the character openly resented. Once DeMarco ends up aboard a real Protector built by the Thermians, she has to step up. She crews the bridge with Jason Nesmith, helps superfan Brandon talk the crew through aborting the Protector’s self-destruct sequence, and survives the Chompers corridor with Nesmith to reach the Omega 13 device that resets time and undoes Sarris’ attack.
Galaxy Quest won the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation and the Nebula Award for Best Script. Sigourney Weaver was nominated for the Saturn Award for Best Actress. The film has aged well in Trek circles, and Scopely’s crossover leans hard on that history.
Her role in STFC
DeMarco is a damage-buff officer for a narrow class of fight. Her bridge ability lifts Isolytic Cascade damage against armadas and invading entities. Her below deck ability lifts Isolytic Cascade damage in PvP, but only when the enemy player carries an active state.
That makes her two officers in one slot: a PvE armada damage piece, or a PvP damage piece on crews built around landing states first. Most players will run her below deck so the bridge stays free for combat captains and direct damage officers.
Captain ability: Chain of Command
DeMarco’s listed Captain’s Maneuver is a placeholder. The in-game description says equipping her as captain provides no benefit. Do not put her in the captain seat. There is no per-rank table to share because the values are all zero.
Officer ability: I Have One Job!
This is why you run her. The bridge ability lifts Isolytic Cascade damage against Armadas and Invading Entities. The in-game card and the official Update 69 patch notes agree on the per-rank progression, so the table below is one you can lean on. Treat the values as current as of the latest game data.
| Rang | Isolytic Cascade damage vs Armadas and Invading Entities |
|---|---|
| 1 | 70% |
| 2 | 90% |
| 3 | 110% |
| 4 | 130% |
| 5 | 150% |
The ability only fires while DeMarco is assigned to the bridge of the ship hitting the target. It does nothing while she sits below deck.
Below deck ability: Hold, Please
Below deck she gives a different Isolytic Cascade boost. The ability lifts Isolytic Cascade damage in PvP when the enemy player has any state on them. “Any state” is the operative phrase. If your crew or refit can apply morale, taunt, burn, hull breach, or any other state to the target, her boost kicks in. If the enemy ship runs clean, she does nothing.
The boost scales with her promotion. The official patch notes ceiling is around 80% Isolytic Cascade damage at rank five against an opponent in any state, current as of the latest data. Take that as a soft number until you see it in your own combat log.
Where DeMarco shines
Three jobs come up over and over for this officer.
Armadas. Isolytic Cascade is one of the multiplicative damage layers that sits on top of your base hit. Her 150% boost at rank five against armada targets goes straight into that layer. On Isolytic-focused armada crews she is one of the most direct ways to push damage higher without changing your captain.
Invading Entities. The Galaxy Quest Invasion brought new server-wide PvE enemies, including the Fatu Krey hostiles and the multi-round Chimera fight. Her ability tags “Invading Entities” by name, so any current or future invading-entity content slots her in by default.
State-based PvP. If your war crews already apply morale, taunt, or another debuff, she goes below deck for extra Isolytic Cascade damage on the kill. She is a poor pick for a clean burst crew that does not touch the enemy with a state first.
How to get Gwen DeMarco shards
DeMarco shards first appeared in Update 69, the Galaxy Quest crossover that ran in August 2024. During that event her shards came out of three places: drops from defeated Fatu Krey hostiles, rewards from Chimera battles, and exchanges in the limited-time Galaxy Quest Invasion event store. That store was only active while Sarris’ Invasion Fleet was present on the server.
Since then her availability has rotated through stores and events the way most past-crossover officers do. Check the current event calendar, the Daily Goals store, and any Galaxy Quest themed return events. The shard cost to promote her runs 120, 120, 240, 320, and 950 shards to push her into ranks one through five, for 1,750 total from recruitment to max rank.
Synergies and crew building
DeMarco is a Science class officer in the Galaxy Quest group, faction Independent. The Galaxy Quest group is small and tightly themed: Epic Jason Nesmith, Epic Gwen DeMarco, Rare Sir Alexander Dane, and Rare Laliari, the four officers who crossed over with Update 69. If you have the room, running her alongside other Galaxy Quest officers picks up the group’s class-synergy bonuses on her ship.
For the bridge ability, the obvious pairings are Isolytic Cascade focused crews already running on armada or invading entity content. She does not need a particular captain to function; she only needs to be sitting on the bridge while you fire the shot. For the below deck slot, look at war crews that already apply at least one state. Crews that lock in a state on hit at the start of a round are the most reliable way to keep her boost active.
The in-game data file does not publish a specific Command, Engineering, and Science synergy line for her group. Treat any specific class synergy percentages you find online with caution until you confirm them on your own ship.
Frequently asked questions
Is Gwen DeMarco worth ranking up?
For armada-focused players who run Isolytic Cascade builds and grind invading entity content, yes. For players who do not yet have Isolytic Cascade unlocked or do not run armadas, she sits in the cabinet until that content opens up.
Can I use Gwen DeMarco as a captain?
No. Her captain card has no effect. The in-game description says equipping her as captain provides no benefit. Always run her on the bridge or below deck.
Where do I get Gwen DeMarco shards?
The first wave came from the Galaxy Quest Invasion event during Update 69 in August 2024: Fatu Krey drops, Chimera battles, and the event store. After that initial run, her shards rotate through later stores and event chains. Check the current event calendar and store rotations.
What ship is Gwen DeMarco best on?
Any ship you would already take into an armada or invading entity fight where Isolytic Cascade is in play. She is a buff officer, not a ship-specific officer. Put her on the bridge of the ship swinging at the target, or below deck on your PvP ship if your crew applies states.
Does her below deck ability work in armadas?
No. Her below deck ability is written for PvP only and activates only when the enemy player has any state on them. For PvE armadas, slot her on the bridge so I Have One Job! fires.
Bottom line
DeMarco is a narrow officer with a clear job. She is strong on Isolytic Cascade armada and invading entity crews and useful on state-heavy PvP rosters. She is a wasted slot on anything else, and she should never sit in the captain chair. If your roster already runs Isolytic Cascade content, she is worth chasing during any return event that prints her shards.
