Bio-mimetic Gel is Chaos Tech, so it runs on its own set of materials rather than the standard Forbidden Tech currencies. You unlock and build Chaos Tech in the Continuum refinery. Chaos Tech Fragments are the base currency: you exchange them into Chaos Tech materials in the refinery, and you collect more of them whenever you pick up excess Chaos Tech shards. To slot the piece onto a ship you also need Chaos Tech Fusion Rods, which open a Chaos Tech slot and let you remove a piece from a ship later; those come from the Continuum refinery or the store.
Upgrading Bio-mimetic Gel
Chaos Tech has two upgrade paths. Tiering up with Chaos Tech Tier-Up Catalyst raises the level cap and switches on the Apex Barrier buff at tier 2. Leveling up with Chaos Tech Reactor and Chaosmatter scales the buff values toward their maximums. Chaosmatter and Chaos Tech Reactor both come from defeating Assimilated El-Aurian hostiles and exchanging their loot in the Continuum refinery, or from the store.

Reaching tier 12 costs 544,000 Chaos Tech Tier-Up Catalyst in total. Taking the piece from level 2 to its level 60 cap costs another 315,500 Chaos Tech Reactor and 730,100 Chaosmatter. The tier 2 unlock is the one milestone worth reaching quickly, since it adds the Apex Barrier buff rather than a bigger number on a buff you already have.
Best ships and uses for Bio-mimetic Gel
Slot Bio-mimetic Gel on the ship you defend with in PvP. Every buff reads “in PvP,” so the piece does nothing against hostiles, in armadas, or while mining. It belongs on a ship that has to survive being attacked: a base defender, or a target you expect other players to hit. One thing to watch is the Apex Barrier buff, which turns off while the officer Tal is assigned to the bridge, so do not pair this piece with a Tal build. Run it with a defensive crew that leans on the damage reduction and Isolytic Defense instead.
