Underappreciated Genius is a story mission in Star Trek Fleet Command in which you help Scotty recover important notes and equipment. You pick it up in Freyda, it needs warp 13 to start and warp 70 to complete, and the only fight is a Nausicaan Scavenger of about 45,000 strength in New Vulcan. The reward is 37,000 Parsteel. The fight is light for the range involved, so the warp 70 finish is the part to plan for.
Underappreciated Genius objectives
The story line reads: Scotty needs help retrieving some important notes and equipment from Delta Vega. There are three objectives and no choice split:
- Go to New Vulcan. Location: New Vulcan.
- Defeat the Nausicaan Scavenger. Location: New Vulcan. Enemy strength about 44,970.
- Return Scotty’s experiments to your Station.
The trip goes out to New Vulcan, where a Nausicaan Scavenger stands in your way, and then home with Scotty’s experiments. The story mentions Delta Vega, but the objectives only name New Vulcan as a location.
Where and what warp
The pickup system is Freyda. The mission needs warp 13 to start and warp 70 to complete, which is a big jump between the two.
The game lists a recommended level of 1. The Nausicaan Scavenger is weak by the standard of warp 70 missions, so the travel range is the real bar.

Why the warp and the fight do not match
Other warp 70 missions, such as Under Heel and Unstoppable, send you against named enemies of about 2 to 2.7 million strength. This one lists a single enemy at about 45,000. That means a player who can already reach New Vulcan will usually find the combat step easy, and the mission becomes a question of range.
The reward is modest at 37,000 Parsteel. For a player who has warp 70 available, it is a short errand; for one who does not, it is a mission to leave until the ship can make the trip.
The mission is built around Scotty, the Starfleet engineer, who is also an officer in the game; the Montgomery Scott page covers him.
Tips
Use a ship with warp 70 and at least enough firepower for a 45,000 strength fight. That combination is easy to meet for most players who have the range.
Pick it up when you are passing Freyda. The start only needs warp 13, so you can accept it early and finish it once your ship reaches warp 70.
The final step is a return to your station, so there is no extra flying after New Vulcan beyond the trip home. Other missions by level are on the mission guide.
