Progress is a level 6 station mission in Star Trek Fleet Command that asks you to upgrade the R&D Department to level 4 so you can reach more research. It needs only warp 1, has no fight, and pays 2,500 Parsteel. Finishing it unlocks Discoveries, the next main storyline mission.

Progress objectives

One objective, no choice split:

  • Upgrade the R&D Department to Level 4.

No system is named and no hostile is listed. The mission completes when the R&D Department reaches level 4.

What R&D level 4 needs

Requirement Amount
Parsteel 500
Base build time 13 minutes
Buildings required Operations 5, Academy 4

If R&D will not upgrade, check Operations and the Academy first. The Parsteel cost is small next to the 2,500 the mission pays back.

Where and what warp

Warp 1 to start and warp 1 to finish, with no pickup system. Everything happens on your station. The recommended level is 6.

Progress rewards

The reward is 2,500 Parsteel. Completing Progress also unlocks the next main storyline mission.

Why R&D 4 matters

R&D level 4 is one of the two requirements for placing the Shipyard, alongside Operations 5. So this upgrade also opens the way to the Shipyard missions that follow, including Shipyard Enhancements, which asks for Shipyard level 6 and comes right after Discoveries.

The same upgrade also completes a separate building mission, Upgrade R&D Department to Level 4, which pays 50 Tritanium and a 1 minute repair speed up.

Progress and the missions around it

Mission Recommended level Story Rewards
Stockpiling Tritanium 6 Begin work on Tritanium generation at the Station 1,750 Parsteel
Progress 6 Improve the R&D Department to access more research 2,500 Parsteel
Discoveries 6 Assist Toryn on his secret mission 12 1★ Battleship Parts, 30 Recruit Token, 80 Officer XP

All three are level 6 missions at warp 1, so they can be run back to back. Discoveries then leads into Shipyard Enhancements.

Tips

Start the R&D upgrade as soon as Operations 5 and Academy 4 are in place. The 13 minute build is short enough to finish while you work on other things. The mission guide lists every mission by level.
