Particle Synthesis is a Rare Chaos Tech in Star Trek Fleet Command, and it is built for mining. Its headline effect raises the mining rate on your Surveyors by up to 1,000% at max, and while you run the Serene Squall it also hands you bonus Transogen on collection and a fat chunk of extra loot from Hostiles, Armadas, and Outposts. If you are into the Chaos Tech system and you mine seriously, this one earns its slot.
What Particle Synthesis does
Particle Synthesis carries three buffs. The one that matters to almost everyone is the Surveyor mining rate boost, which starts at 20% when it unlocks and climbs to 1,000% once the piece is maxed. The other two are tied to a single ship, the Serene Squall: one adds bonus Transogen when you collect, and the other lifts your loot from Hostiles, Armadas, and Outposts. All three values scale as you level the piece up.
| Buff | Unlocks at tier | Unlock value | Max value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bonus Transogen on collection (Serene Squall) | 1 | 3% | 30% |
| Extra loot from Hostiles, Armadas, Outposts (Serene Squall) | 1 | 0.5% | 50% |
| Mining rate on Surveyors | 2 | 20% | 1,000% |
In practice that means a maxed Particle Synthesis roughly doubles-and-then-some what a Surveyor pulls per cycle, so full nodes clear far faster. The Serene Squall buffs stack a mining payout on top of a combat payout, which is why the piece rewards players who actually fly that ship.
How to get Particle Synthesis
Particle Synthesis lives in the Chaos Tech system, so it uses that system’s currencies rather than the standard Forbidden Tech ones. You unlock a Chaos Tech slot (or clear a piece off a ship) with Chaos Tech Fusion Rods, which come from the Continuum refinery or the store. The piece itself is assembled from Chaos Tech materials you exchange in the Continuum refinery. When you pick up excess Chaos Tech shards, they convert into Chaos Tech Fragments, and those Fragments exchange into the materials you need in that same refinery.
Upgrading Particle Synthesis
Two separate tracks push the piece forward. Tiers raise the level cap and switch on later buffs: the Surveyor mining buff, for example, stays dormant until you reach tier 2. Levels then scale every active buff toward its max value. Particle Synthesis tops out at tier 12 and level 60.
| Tier | Level cap | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 5 | Starting tier, no cost |
| 7 | 35 | 27,000 Chaos Tech Tier-Up Catalyst |
| 12 | 60 | 30,000 Chaos Tech Tier-Up Catalyst |
Reaching max tier costs 272,000 Chaos Tech Tier-Up Catalyst in total. Leveling all the way from 2 to 60 runs 155,825 Chaos Tech Reactor and 366,000 Chaosmatter, both of which you earn by defeating Assimilated El-Aurian hostiles and exchanging their loot in the Continuum refinery.
Best ships and uses for Particle Synthesis
This is a mining piece first. The Surveyor mining rate buff applies to your survey ships, so the obvious home is whichever Surveyor you send out to farm raw materials all day. The other two buffs only fire when you are flying the Serene Squall, so if you run that ship for its own loot and Transogen, Particle Synthesis turns those runs into a second income stream. If you chase Armada rewards, the loot buff also touches Armada payouts on the Serene Squall, so it pairs well with anyone working through solo Armadas on that hull.
Particle Synthesis in Star Trek
Particle Synthesis is a game concept rather than a piece of hardware you can point to in an episode. The in-game story frames it as an advanced technology that builds artificial structures and environments so convincing they beat ordinary holo-imaging, to the point of changing how a starship looks. The idea of holographic disguise and sensor trickery runs through plenty of Star Trek, from holo-emitters to cloaks that fake a ship’s appearance, but the specific tool called Particle Synthesis belongs to Star Trek Fleet Command. Its stated trick is deception: make an enemy believe your ship is one of their own, then take the opening.
Is Particle Synthesis worth it?
For a dedicated miner, yes. A 1,000% Surveyor mining rate is a serious return on the slot, and it helps every account that gathers raw materials at scale. The Serene Squall buffs are narrower, so how much you value them depends on whether that ship is part of your rotation. If it is, take Particle Synthesis high. If you never fly the Serene Squall, you are buying it for the mining buff alone, which is still a solid reason to level it.
