Malon Extractor is a Rare Forbidden Tech in Star Trek Fleet Command, and it is built entirely around mining. Its lead buff raises your gas mining rate from 50% at unlock to 1,300% at maximum, and later tiers add cargo capacity, a general mining rate bonus, and protected cargo. If gas is the resource holding your base back, this is the piece to put on your miner.

What Malon Extractor does

Four buffs sit on this piece, and the gas mining bonus is the one that carries it. That buff is live from tier 1, so the Extractor starts working the moment you unlock it, and it keeps growing every level after that. The other three switch on at later tiers and broaden the piece from a pure gas tool into a general mining upgrade.

Buff Unlocks at tier Unlock value Max value
Increases Gas Mining rate 1 50% 1,300%
Increases Cargo capacity 3 20% 200%
Increases Mining rate 6 50% 900%
Increases Protected Cargo 8 50% 1,000%

Those values are current as of the latest game data, and each buff scales with the item’s level between its unlock number and its maximum. Read together, they change how a mining trip actually plays out: you pull ore faster, you hold more of it before the hold fills, and once protected cargo comes online you keep more of the haul when someone shoots you off the node.

How to get Malon Extractor

Forbidden Tech is unlocked in the Forbidden Tech refinery using rarity Fragments. Malon Extractor is a Rare piece, so Rare Forbidden Fragments are what you spend on it, and those come from Q’s Trials and from special rewards. You will also need Forbidden Tech Fusion Rods, which are what open a Forbidden Tech slot on a ship in the first place and what let you pull a piece back off a ship later. Fusion Rods come from the Forbidden Tech refinery and the store. If you end up with excess parts you cannot use, they convert into Forbidden Tech Credit Pieces, which exchange for Forbidden Tech Credits back in the refinery.

Upgrading Malon Extractor

There are two upgrade tracks and they do different jobs. Tiering up with Forbidden Tech Tier-Up Catalysts raises the level cap and switches on the buffs waiting at tiers 3, 6, and 8. Leveling up with Forbidden Tech Protomatter scales the values you already have toward their maximums. Both are attempts rather than straight purchases: each one consumes Forbidden Tech Reactors, and Probability Devices raise the chance an upgrade succeeds.

Tier Level cap Cost
1 5 Starting tier
7 35 32 Forbidden Tech Reactor, 4,200 Forbidden Tech Tier-Up Catalyst
12 60 32 Forbidden Tech Reactor, 4,900 Forbidden Tech Tier-Up Catalyst

Taking the piece all the way to tier 12 costs 352 Forbidden Tech Reactor and 57,000 Forbidden Tech Tier-Up Catalyst in total. Filling in levels 2 through 60 costs a further 1,856 Forbidden Tech Reactor and 475,975 Forbidden Tech Protomatter. Catalysts and Protomatter come out of the Forbidden Tech refinery, Q’s Trials, and the store, while Reactors come from Daily Goals and the store. Tier 3 and tier 6 are the two milestones worth pushing toward first, because each one hands you a new buff instead of a bigger version of an old one.

Best ships and uses for Malon Extractor

This one belongs on a dedicated mining ship, not on anything you take into combat. None of its four buffs do a thing in PvP, hostile grinding, or armadas. Slot it on whichever ship you park on gas nodes, since the gas bonus is by far the largest number on the piece and the only buff available before tier 3. If you run separate miners for different resources, the Extractor goes on the gas hauler first and only moves once the general mining rate buff at tier 6 is running.

Cargo capacity and protected cargo change the calculus on longer trips. More capacity means fewer round trips to a node you have already cleared travel time for, and protected cargo means a raid on your miner costs you less of what you spent the last hour collecting. Both matter most in contested space, where you are mining in a system other players actively hunt.

Malon Extractor in Star Trek

The Malon come from Star Trek: Voyager, where the crew ran into them in the Delta Quadrant. Their economy runs on hauling antimatter waste in enormous export vessels and dumping it in open space, because they never developed a way to recycle it. The byproduct is theta radiation, which is lethal to the crews who handle it, and Malon controllers treat the sailors who die of it as an operating cost. Voyager encountered a Malon vessel in “Night” and boarded a crippled freighter in “Juggernaut,” where a core laborer had been driven mad by radiation exposure. The extractor itself is a game invention rather than a specific piece of screen technology, drawn from that waste-hauling operation.

Is Malon Extractor worth it?

For anyone who mines seriously, yes. Gas is a constant bottleneck for base building and research, and a buff that climbs to 1,300% is the difference between a node being worth the trip and not. It is a Rare piece rather than an Epic one, so the material bill is lighter than the headline Forbidden Tech everyone chases. Get it to tier 6 for the second mining buff, then keep leveling it while your Protomatter allows.
