Minerals of the Frontier is a level 62 mission in Star Trek Fleet Command that sets you up to mine the Mortican Frontier. It needs only warp 1 to start and finish and has two objectives: build a 6* UNC Survey Ship and claim its survey chest, then mine 2,000 Σ-Parsteel. The reward is 1 Optolythic Daten Rod and 288,000 Raw Σ-Tritanium, and finishing it unlocks Why Can’t We Be Friends? It is a quick mission if you already have the materials for the ship.
Minerals of the Frontier objectives
There are two objectives and no choice split:
- Build a 6* UNC Survey Ship and claim the UNC Survey Chest.
- Mine 2000 Σ-Parsteel.
Howards has been studying the Frontier and thinks the minerals there are unusual in a geological sense, with chemical makeups unlike anything he has seen. He has drawn up designs for a survey ship to study them. Once you build it, he points you to the Gift section to claim the 6* Ungewöhnlich Survey Chest, which he says will help him check the ship’s performance.
The second step is a test run. Howards asks for 2,000 Σ-Parsteel so he can work out what makes the material special, and the mission ends once you have mined it.

No pickup system and no locations are named, and warp 1 covers the start and the finish. The mining step can be done wherever you find Σ-Parsteel. The recommended level is 62.

The Frontier missions continue the main storyline beyond level 60. This one sits between two exploration missions, all at level 62:

This is the only one of the three that needs no long warp, since the objectives are a build and a mining run rather than travel.
Tips
Claim the chest as soon as the ship is built. The first objective only clears when both halves are done, so a finished ship with an unclaimed chest will leave you stuck.
Put the new survey ship straight onto a Σ-Parsteel node for the second step. The Frontier is the level 61 mission that first takes you into the Mortican Frontier, and other missions by level are listed on the mission guide.
