We’re Going to Need a Bigger Boat is a level 25 mission in Star Trek Fleet Command where you upgrade your station to prepare for the imminent Borg threat. It can be picked up at warp 1 and needs warp 18 to complete. You attend a security briefing on Hynes in Gemet, upgrade the R&D Department to level 23 and build the Armada Control Center. The reward is 653,000 Parsteel, 20,000 Dilithium and a stack of speed ups, which goes a long way toward paying for the two upgrades it asks for.
We’re Going to Need a Bigger Boat objectives
There are three objectives and no choice split:
- Attend the security briefing on Hynes. Location: Gemet.
- Upgrade the R&D module to Level 23.
- Construct the Armada Control Center.
Only the first objective involves travel. The other two are station builds: the R&D Department has to reach level 23, and the Armada Control Center has to be built. There is no fight.
What the two builds need
The mission asks for nothing beyond the builds, but each has its own cost and requirements in the current building data. These are base values:

The game describes the Armada Control Center as the building that lets you start Armada attacks on hostile targets, with upgrades raising the number of allied ships that can join.

The mission needs warp 1 to start and warp 18 to complete. The only system involved is Gemet, where the briefing on Hynes takes place; everything else happens at your station. The recommended level is 25.

Tips
Check the requirements before you start. R&D 23 needs Operations 23, Academy 23 and Defense Platform A 23, and the Armada Control Center needs Operations 23 plus its unlock research. If any of those is missing, that is your real first step.
Stockpile 3★ Common Refined Gas. The R&D upgrade asks for 200, and it is the one line in either build that is not a basic resource.
Count the payback. The two builds together cost 822,723 Parsteel and 13,042 Dilithium at base values. The mission returns 653,000 Parsteel and 20,000 Dilithium, so it covers most of the Parsteel and all of the Dilithium. The two 1 Day Speed Ups on top can go straight into the next long build.
The Gemet briefing is the first objective and the only reason to leave your station, so a ship with warp 18 range is all the travel this mission needs. For every other mission by level, see the mission guide.
