Who Zahra is
Zahra is a common Federation officer in Star Trek Fleet Command, classed as Engineering and grouped under Auxiliary Controls. Her job is narrow but specific: she makes your station harder to crack when somebody parks a fleet over it. Both of her abilities only fire when the ship she’s on is defending the Station.
That focus is the headline. If you want a defensive station crew on a budget, Zahra is one of the easiest pieces to obtain and one of the simplest to slot in. If you want a general-purpose combat officer for hostiles, mining, or attack runs, she will not do anything for you, because every effect on her card is gated on station defense.
Star Trek background
Zahra is an original character created by Scopely for the Auxiliary Controls group of low-rarity officers in Star Trek Fleet Command. There is no canonical Trek entry tying her to a specific series, episode, or actor. The flavor text on her card is the only backstory the game gives: a frontier Federation colonist who grew up valuing self-reliance, handy with a phaser, scrappy in a fight, capable with locks, and trained well enough on starship systems to be useful in engineering. She pursued the engineering track officially but has stepped in as away-team security more than once.
That short bio is the whole story. If a player asks where Zahra comes from in Trek, the honest answer is that she does not come from Trek itself; she is part of the game’s expanded roster of original Starfleet personnel.
Role in STFC
Zahra sits in the station-defense bucket. Her two abilities both trigger only when the ship she is assigned to is defending the Station, which sharply limits where she is useful and what she does. She is not a combat captain for hostile grinding, not a mining buff, and not an armada piece. The card was written to give early-game players an inexpensive option for parking a defensive fleet at home.
Because Zahra is common rarity, ranking her up costs a small amount of shards and credits compared with rare or epic officers, and her shard supply tends to come from common-officer sources rather than gated behind a specific event. New players will see her in early recruitment and have her up to a usable rank well before they have a proper rare or epic station crew.
Captain ability
Zahra’s captain ability is called Station Expert. Set as the captain of a ship that is defending the Station, she increases the ship’s Hull Health by 10%. As of the latest data, the rank-1 number for that buff is the safe one to quote: the ability does not scale cleanly with promotion, so promoting Zahra is about boosting her officer ability rather than nudging the captain bonus.
The practical effect is small but real. On a low-rarity defender, an extra slice of Hull Health gives the ship a little more time on grid before it pops, which can matter against an attacker who has not built specifically against high-hull defenders. It is not a game-changing captain maneuver, and it is not designed to be. It is a beginner’s defensive captain that costs almost nothing to set up.
Officer ability
Zahra’s officer ability is Home Engineer. When she is assigned to the bridge of a ship that is defending the Station, she increases the ship’s Weapon Damage. The bonus is per-rank, and the per-rank progression looks like this, current as of the latest game data:
| Rank | Weapon damage bonus |
|---|---|
| 1 | 5% |
| 2 | 8% |
| 3 | 10% |
| 4 | 15% |
| 5 | 20% |
Two things to take away. First, Home Engineer matters only on a defender ship, and only while it sits at the station. Second, the bonus scales noticeably with promotion: rank 5 is four times rank 1. If you plan to keep Zahra on a defending bridge, getting her to rank 5 is the obvious target.
Where Zahra shines
Three honest use cases.
- Early-game station defense. A new commander who has not pulled rare-or-better defenders can crew a base-tier defender with Zahra and squeeze a real but modest damage bump on it.
- Filling a bridge slot when better officers are busy. If your stronger crew is out raiding or grinding, Zahra slots into a backup defender so the home fleet is not blank.
- Common-officer roster goals. Some players work toward maxing every common officer for achievement points and the small shard refunds that come with full ranks. Zahra is one of the simpler ones to clear.
What Zahra is not: she is not a meta defender at higher ops levels, where rare and epic station-defense officers carry far heavier hull, damage, and mitigation numbers. Once you pull better defenders, Zahra usually rotates out of the active crew.
How to get Zahra shards
Zahra is a common officer, so her shards typically come from common shard packs, recruitment chests, and basic recruit tokens, the same pool that drops other Auxiliary Controls and low-rarity officers. Check the current store and event rotations for any specific bundle that happens to include her on the day you go looking. STFC moves the supply around often, so the better play is to look at what is actually live in the recruit panel rather than chase a specific store entry.
Promotion costs are mild relative to higher-rarity officers. The first few ranks need only a handful of shards each, and the climb to rank 5 takes a small triple-digit total but no rare-officer-level grinding.
Synergies
Synergy on Zahra’s card pays Command 10%, Engineering 5%, and Science 10%. The Engineering line is effectively a tax, because Zahra herself is Engineering: her own class pays her the smallest synergy bonus. The captain seat picks up better value when paired with Command or Science officers on the rest of the bridge.
Practically, that means if you build a station-defense crew with Zahra as the captain, the next two seats want to be Command or Science officers from the same era of common-and-uncommon roster. As soon as you pull a rare or epic station-defense captain, that captain takes the seat and Zahra moves to officer slot or to the bench.
Frequently asked questions
Is Zahra any good?
For early-game station defense, yes, in the limited sense that she costs almost nothing and gives a real bump on a defender. For everything else, no. Her abilities do not fire outside of station defense, so she has no role in hostiles, mining, armadas, or PvP raiding.
Where do you get Zahra shards?
Common officer shard sources: basic recruit pulls, common shard chests, and whatever live event or store happens to bundle her on a given week. The game shuffles those rotations regularly, so check what is available in-game rather than relying on a fixed list.
What ship is Zahra best on?
Any defender you keep parked at the Station, since Home Engineer only triggers there. Early on that means whatever defender you have available, including the base-tier defender ship the tutorial gives you. Higher up the tree, players move to dedicated defending hulls, and Zahra will follow only until a better station-defense officer crowds her out.
Is Zahra worth ranking up?
If you plan to use her on a defender crew, rank 5 is the obvious goal because Home Engineer scales from 5% to 20% Weapon Damage between rank 1 and rank 5. If you do not use station-defense crews at all, the promotion shards are better spent elsewhere.
Is Zahra a canon Star Trek character?
No. Zahra is an original character created for Star Trek Fleet Command. She does not appear in any canonical Trek source, and her in-game flavor text is the only backstory you will find.
Bottom line
Zahra is a tool for one job: making your defending bridge slightly harder to break while the home fleet trades blows over the Station. She does that job for almost no cost, and she retires from the active crew the moment you pull a better defender. New players should pick her up while she is cheap. Established players have generally moved on.
