Kang, the Klingon Dahar Master

Kang is an Epic Command officer in Star Trek Fleet Command, drawn from the original Klingon roster. He is a combat officer first. His officer ability feeds the ship a slice of the crew’s Attack as extra Accuracy, and his captain ability opens every fight by trying to land a Hull Breach on the target.

If you play in Klingon space or want a bridge officer who helps your shots connect against high-Dodge enemies, Kang is worth a look. He comes from the early Klingon officer set, so he earns his keep mainly for new and mid-game players rather than as a fixture of end-game crews.

Kang in Star Trek

Kang is a Klingon military officer and diplomat, played by Michael Ansara across three Star Trek series. He first appeared in the Original Series episode “Day of the Dove,” returned decades later in Deep Space Nine’s “Blood Oath,” and showed up again in Voyager’s “Flashback.” Few Klingon characters span that much of the timeline.

In canon, Kang held the rank of Dahar Master, a title reserved for the most respected warriors in the Klingon Empire. He commanded a D7-class battle cruiser, traded blows and words with Captain Kirk, and kept long friendships with the Klingons Kor and Koloth and with the Federation’s Curzon Dax. His wife, Mara, was his science officer aboard that battle cruiser. He named his son Dax after his Federation friend.

The Deep Space Nine episode “Blood Oath” gives Kang’s STFC officer ability its name. Kang, Kor, Koloth, and Curzon Dax swore an oath to avenge their murdered children against a raider known as the Albino. Kang died fulfilling that oath and later earned a statue among the Hall of Heroes on Qo’noS. His in-game flavor text fits the canon character: a skilled fighter and negotiator who holds himself and his crew to an iron code.

Kang’s role in STFC

Kang is a Command-class officer, and almost everything he offers points at combat. He belongs to the Blood & Honor synergy group, one of the early Klingon officer sets, so he slots naturally into crews built around Klingon officers and Klingon-space activity.

His job on a crew is to make your ship hit more reliably. Accuracy in STFC works against an enemy’s Dodge. The higher your Accuracy relative to their Dodge, the more of your shots land as normal hits instead of weaker glancing blows. Kang’s officer ability turns part of the crew’s Attack into exactly that stat, which makes him a support-style combat officer rather than a raw damage dealer.

Kang’s abilities

Captain ability: Dahar Master

When Kang captains the ship, Dahar Master gives him a chance at the start of combat to inflict a Hull Breach on the opponent that lasts 3 rounds. A Hull Breach chips away at the target over those rounds, so landing it early tilts a fight your way before either side has traded much fire.

As of the latest game data, that chance sits at 80%. Treat Dahar Master as a consistent opening effect rather than something that climbs neatly with every promotion. The takeaway is simple: put Kang in the captain’s chair and most fights start with the enemy already taking Hull Breach damage.

Officer ability: Blood Oath

Blood Oath is the ability that earns Kang his seat. When he is on the bridge, at the start of battle he raises the ship’s Accuracy by a percentage of the total Attack of the crew. The bonus grows each time you promote him, and the jump between ranks is steep.

Here is the per-rank progression, current as of the latest game data:

Rank Accuracy from crew Attack
1 100%
2 200%
3 400%
4 800%
5 1,600%

Because the bonus scales off the crew’s Attack, Kang gets stronger as the officers around him get stronger. A fully ranked Kang on a crew of high-Attack officers can push Accuracy high enough to beat the Dodge on most targets you meet in combat.

Where Kang shines

Kang earns his spot in a few clear situations.

The first is any fight where the enemy’s Dodge is giving you trouble. Interceptor-class ships and some hostiles lean on Dodge to turn your hits into glancing blows. Kang’s Accuracy boost answers that directly and helps your shots land at full strength.

The second is Klingon-faction play. Kang is a Klingon officer in a Klingon synergy group, so he fits crews you are already building for Klingon reputation grinding and Klingon-space combat.

The third is value for newer players. Blood Oath works from any bridge seat, not only the captain’s chair, so you can run another officer as captain and still collect Kang’s Accuracy. That flexibility makes him an easy include while you are still assembling a deep officer roster.

How to get Kang

Kang is one of the older Klingon officers, recruited and ranked up with officer shards. Collecting enough shards promotes him through five ranks, from Ensign up to Commander.

Shard sources rotate, so check the current faction store and event rotations rather than counting on one fixed source. Ranking him up also costs Klingon Credits and Command Badges, the standard upgrade currencies for Klingon officers, plus Officer XP to raise his level. He also has three character traits, Diplomat, Analytical, and Leader, that you unlock in order as you invest in him.

The shard cost per rank, current as of the latest game data, looks like this:

Rank Shards to promote
1 95
2 95
3 190
4 285
5 760

That works out to 1,425 shards to take Kang from recruitment to his final rank. The early ranks are cheap; the climb to rank 5 is where most of the cost sits.

Kang’s synergy

Kang’s synergy comes in two parts: a class-based bonus and a set of named synergy officers.

The class bonus, current as of the latest game data, adds synergy when Kang is paired with officers of certain classes: 5% with Command officers, 10% with Engineering officers, and 10% with Science officers. The Engineering and Science pairings give the larger lift.

His named synergy officers are all Klingons from the same Blood & Honor group:

  • Mara: 10%
  • Krell: 10%
  • Kuron: 5%
  • Yan’agh: 10%
  • Qa’ug: 10%
  • Linkasa: 10%

Mara fits as a partner in canon as much as in game, since she was Kang’s wife and science officer. Pairing Kang with these officers leans into his Klingon-crew identity. Beyond this group, keep crew choices tied to what you are actually fighting, because Kang’s Accuracy boost pays off most against high-Dodge targets.

Frequently asked questions

Is Kang any good in STFC?

Kang is a solid combat support officer for new and mid-game players, especially if you are leaning into Klingon crews. His Accuracy boost is useful against high-Dodge enemies. He is not an end-game staple, but he does a specific job well.

Where do you get Kang shards?

Kang shards come from officer recruiting, and availability shifts over time. Check the current faction store and event rotations to see where to pick them up right now.

What does Blood Oath do?

Blood Oath raises your ship’s Accuracy by a percentage of the crew’s total Attack at the start of battle. The percentage climbs sharply with each promotion, from 100% at rank 1 to 1,600% at rank 5.

Is Kang worth ranking up?

If Kang is in your regular combat crew, yes. Blood Oath roughly doubles in strength with each rank, so a low-rank Kang gives only a fraction of the Accuracy a maxed one does. If he is a bench officer, spend your shards elsewhere first.

Does Kang have to be captain?

No. Blood Oath works from any bridge seat, so Kang gives his Accuracy boost as a regular officer. Dahar Master, his Hull Breach effect, is the part that only triggers when he captains the ship.

Closing thoughts

Kang is a clean pick for players building Klingon combat crews who want their shots to land. He rewards a bit of investment, since the Accuracy from Blood Oath is modest at low rank and strong at rank 5. If you are fighting dodgy targets in Klingon space and have the shards to spare, Kang will pull his weight. If your roster has already moved on to newer officers, he is a comfortable officer to retire to the bench.
