Wachtmeister Mara

Mara at a glance

Mara is the Klingon science officer from the original-series episode “Day of the Dove.” In Star Trek Fleet Command she lands on Klingon-aligned crews as a damage and debuff officer. Her captain ability boosts weapon damage against Interceptors. Her officer ability lowers an enemy’s Dodge once your ship has applied a Hull Breach.

She is a Rare officer at max rank 5, sits in the Science class, and belongs to the Blood & Honor synergy group with Klaa, Kerla, Koth, and the rest of the early Klingon roster. She will not top an end-game tier list, but she fills a specific gap on Klingon crews fighting other players’ Interceptors and on Hull Breach crews that need anti-Dodge pressure.

Star Trek background

Mara first appeared in the original-series episode “Day of the Dove” (1968), played by Susan Howard. She is the wife of Captain Kang and a science officer aboard his battle cruiser. In the episode an alien entity that feeds on hatred manipulates Kang’s crew and Captain Kirk’s into endless combat aboard the Unternehmen. Mara is one of the people who convinces Kang that the alien is the real enemy, and Kang and Kirk eventually drive the entity off the ship together by laughing at it.

Mara is widely cited as the first featured Klingon female character in Star Trek. The science-officer role was a small but interesting choice; most TOS-era Klingons on screen were soldiers, so a calm, analytical Klingon woman gave the writers something different to work with. Star Trek Fleet Command picks up that side of the character in the “Icy Analyst” name on her captain ability.

Role in STFC

Mara fits into the Klingon Empire’s early-game and mid-game lineup. She is a Rare officer that you can typically pull from generic recruit tokens, which makes her easier to acquire and rank up than the Epic-tier Klingons. She belongs to the Blood & Honor synergy group, so she shares the group bonus with other Blood & Honor Offiziere when seated on the same bridge.

Functionally, she is a niche damage and debuff officer. Her captain ability points her at a specific opponent class (Interceptors). Her officer ability triggers off a specific opponent state (Hull Breach). She is a right-tool-for-the-job officer, not a generalist. If your fight does not involve an Interceptor or your ship cannot reliably apply Hull Breach, she is not the pick.

Captain ability: Icy Analyst

When Mara is in the captain chair, the Icy Analyst ability adds +20% Weapon Damage to your ship when you are fighting an Interceptor (as of the latest Daten). The captain bonus does not scale up with her rank, so the same number applies whether you have her at rank 1 or rank 5.

In practice, this is a captain pick for crews built around fighting other Interceptors. That mostly comes up in Klingon-vs-Klingon PvP and against PvE Interceptor hostiles. Against Schlachtschiffe and Explorers her captain bonus does nothing.

Officer ability: Wife of a Dahar

Seat Mara on the bridge as an officer rather than captain and her job changes. Wife of a Dahar fires at the end of every round and lowers the enemy’s Dodge by a fixed percentage, but only while the opposing ship has a Hull Breach. The reduction stacks across rounds as long as the Hull Breach stays up and Mara is on the bridge.

The per-round Dodge reduction grows with her rank, current as of the latest game data:

Rang Dodge reduction per round
1 20%
2 25%
3 30%
4 35%
5 40%

The number doubles from rank 1 to rank 5, so the difference between a low-rank Mara and a maxed Mara is large. If you plan to use the officer ability seriously, push her to rank 5.

Where Mara shines

Three matchups call for Mara specifically:

  1. Klingon-vs-Klingon PvP, when both sides bring Interceptors. Putting Mara as captain on your own Interceptor can give you a real damage edge in those mirror fights.
  2. PvE against Interceptor hostiles. Some Klingon territory and faction-zone hostiles are Interceptor-class, and Mara’s captain bonus carries through.
  3. Hull Breach crews, even when she is not captain. If you run a bridge built around Kati or other Hull Breach setters, Mara’s officer ability is a clean addition. The Dodge debuff stacks each round, which matters most in longer PvP brawls and in extended PvE fights.

Outside those situations she is not your best Klingon pick. For general Klingon-faction grinding, generic PvP, or armada combat, other Klingon officers cover more ground.

How to get Mara

Mara is a Rare officer, so her shards have historically come from a few sources: generic Recruit Token pulls (Rare tier), Klingonenfraktion store rotations, and various event chests and store offers. The exact current source rotates with each event, so check the active event store and the recruit options in your game client.

For most players the steady-state path is to keep Mara on your shard wishlist, pull on Rare tokens when you have them, and pick up extra shards opportunistically when they show up in the faction store. Rare officers come in slowly but reliably this way.

Synergies

Mara sits in the Blood & Honor synergy group, alongside other early Klingon officers like Kang, Kerla, Klaa, Koth, and Kras. Seating multiple Blood & Honor officers on the same bridge stacks the group’s synergy bonus.

When Mara is captain, her seat draws partial class-synergy bonuses based on the classes of the two officers next to her. As of the latest data, those bonuses are: Command 20%, Engineering 20%, Science 10%. In plain English, you get the strongest extra boost from seating Command-class or Engineering-class officers next to her, and a smaller bonus from Science-class officers. A typical Mara-captained crew pairs her with Klingon Command officers like Kang for the strongest synergy.

When she is on the bridge as an officer rather than captain, the same logic applies in reverse: she contributes Science-class synergy to whoever sits in the captain seat.

Frequently asked questions

Is Mara any good?

Yes for the narrow role she covers. Against Interceptors, or against any target with a Hull Breach on it, she earns her seat. Outside those situations there are stronger Klingon officers to use for general PvE and PvP.

Where do you get Mara shards?

Recruit Token pulls (Rare tier) and event store rotations are the standard sources for Rare Klingon officers like Mara. Check the current event and faction store availability in your game client; specific drop rates and current stores change with each event cycle.

What ship is Mara best on?

As captain she fits any Klingon Interceptor you fly against other Interceptors. As a bridge officer she belongs on ships built around reliable Hull Breach uptime, usually crews using officers that apply Burn or Hull Breach on hit.

Is Mara worth ranking to 5?

If you plan to use her officer ability seriously, yes. Wife of a Dahar doubles in strength from rank 1 to rank 5, and the Dodge debuff is the main reason to seat her in the first place. The captain ability does not scale, so the value of ranking her up is almost entirely on the officer-ability side.

Does Mara work outside of Klingon crews?

She can sit on any bridge mechanically, but you lose the Blood & Honor group bonus when she is mixed with non-group officers. Her best home is on a Klingon crew that fits her two abilities.

Bottom line

Mara is a niche specialist. Klingon players who fight other Interceptors, or who run Hull Breach crews that need help cracking high-Dodge targets, get a real return on investing in her. If your day-to-day is general PvE grinding or non-Klingon PvP, you can leave her at low rank and chase a more general-purpose officer first.
