He’s a defensive specialist for player versus player combat, where his captain effect and bridge passive both work to dull what the other ship can throw at you.

Players come to Saru when they want a steady seat for PvP defense, or when they’re rounding out a Föderation captain pool early. He’s not a hostile-killing officer and he’s not built for mining or station defense, so the value he brings depends on how often you actually fight other players.

If that sounds like your play loop, Saru tends to grow on you. Both of his effects are written around the assumption that you are taking damage, which means the worse the fight is going for you, the more he pulls his weight.

Star Trek background

Saru is a Kelpien from the planet Kaminar, the first member of his species to leave the homeworld voluntarily and the first to wear a Starfleet uniform. In Star Trek: Discovery, he serves under Captain Philippa Georgiou aboard the USS Shenzhou before transferring to the USS Discovery, where he climbs from first officer to captain, then eventually steps away from Starfleet for a role as a Federation ambassador.

Kelpiens evolved as a prey species, which colors how the character thinks under pressure. Saru carries threat ganglia, biological sensors at the back of the head that warn him when death is near. Doug Jones plays the role across the entire run of Discovery.

That fear-aware backstory matches how the in-game officer functions. He’s the crewman who anticipates the hit before it lands, and the game leans into that idea for both of his abilities.

Saru’s role in STFC

This is a player versus player officer first and foremost. Both of his abilities are written to fire only when you’re fighting another player’s ship, so you’ll see most of his work pairing with other PvP defense crews on a station-attack ship or a hit-back battleship. He doesn’t activate against hostiles or other PvE targets.

Inside that PvP niche, he sits on the defensive side of the equation. He won’t raise your damage or your armor. He drags the other ship’s offense down, which means he plays well with hull-soaking captains and with bridge Offiziere that further cut incoming damage.

Captain ability and officer ability

Saru has two abilities, both written as defensive PvP tools.

Captain ability: Precautions

When Saru is captain, every time your ship takes a Critical Hit from another player’s ship, the opponent’s Critical Hit Chance drops. At rank 1 that reduction is 10 percent, as of the latest Daten. The effect is reactive, so it only kicks in once the other ship has already crit you at least once. Treat the rest of the rank progression as a promotion-scaling upgrade rather than a published per-rank table; the in-game data for this particular captain effect isn’t a clean rank ladder, so the safe number to quote is the rank 1 value.

Officer ability: Avoid Danger

With Saru on the bridge but not as captain, an opposing player’s ship deals less weapon damage to yours. The reduction grows as you promote him through the rank track. Current per-rank values, as of the latest game data:

Rang

Avoid Danger reduction

1

30%

2

40%

3

50%

4

60%

5

70%

The reduction is large at the top of the rank ladder, which is why players push him past rank 3 once the shards are there. Note this is a player versus player effect only.

Where Saru shines

A few patterns players land on with him:

On a battleship built to absorb fire in PvP, paired with a damage-soaking captain and another officer that also cuts incoming damage. The stacked reductions make trades that should be lethal survivable.

As an early-to-mid-game answer to being targeted by players you can’t out-damage. Even at lower ranks, a 30 to 50 percent cut to incoming weapon damage buys time to call a shield or run.

On a Federation-leaning crew where the captain seat picks up Saru’s bonus to Engineering and Wissenschaft class seats, so the partner officers want to be in one of those classes.

If you mostly fight hostiles or run armadas, he sits on the bench. The abilities have no effect outside of player combat.

A small note on positioning. Because Precautions only triggers off a Critical Hit, Saru tends to look better in slow, attrition-style PvP trades than in fast burst exchanges where the fight ends before he can stack the debuff.

How to get Saru shards

Saru rotates through Federation-aligned recruit options and event rotations connected to the Discovery storyline. Specific event availability shifts often, so check the current store and event rotations in-game rather than trusting a year-old guide. He recruits at Seltene, so 32 shards are enough to open him up.

For full promotion through rank 5, plan on 496 shards total. The breakdown by rank:

Rang

Shards to promote

Max level after promotion

1 (Ensign)

32

5

2 (Lt. Commander)

128

20

5 (Commander)

192

30

Synergies and crew building

Saru carries the class-synergy bonuses you’d expect from a Befehl officer who anchors a defensive crew. When he’s in the captain seat, the bridge officers pick up a synergy bonus based on their class: Command 5%, Technik 10%, Science 10%, as of the latest data. The bigger numbers for Engineering and Science say what the design is telling you, that Saru prefers a non-Command supporting cast over duplicating his own class.

Beyond the class numbers, the named synergy officer list isn’t reliably exposed in the same way per-rank stats are, so it’s safer to talk about the synergy in role terms. Another player-combat damage reducer in one of the open seats, plus a hull or shield buffer in the other, will get the most mileage out of Saru’s captain effect. For a current named-officer crew, the synergy listing inside the game’s officer screen is the source of truth.

Frequently asked questions

Is Saru any good?

For player combat defense, yes, particularly once Avoid Danger is at rank 3 or above. Outside PvP, both abilities sit silent.

What ship is Saru best on?

Whatever battleship you take into PvP. He fits most often on a Federation explorer or battleship built to trade hits, because his captain effect needs you to actually take a Critical Hit before it triggers.

Where do you get Saru shards?

Check the active Discovery event rotations and the current recruit token chests. Availability changes regularly, so trust what’s in your in-game store today over an older list.

Is Saru worth ranking up?

Worth pushing to rank 3 or 4 if you spend any real time in PvP. The bigger gains live in the back half of the rank track, where Avoid Danger crosses 50 percent.

Does Saru help against hostiles or armadas?

No. Both of his abilities specify that they only trigger against other players’ ships. He’ll sit on the bridge cosmetically in PvE, but he won’t actually contribute to those fights.

Who Saru is right for

Saru is a smart pick for a player fighting other players often enough to feel the difference, especially mid-game commanders building their first real PvP defensive crew. If your weekly play is mostly hostile farming or armadas, your shard budget is better spent elsewhere. If you’ve already got the recruit credit and a battleship that wants to soak hits, he earns the bridge seat.

[89
116,461,115,125
post-7156","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-officers","tag-command-class-officers","tag-discovery-officer-group","tag-federation-faction-officers","tag-rare-officers
["GET
