He also slots into a few specific event grinds and protected-cargo workflows later on, so most accounts keep him around at some rank.

This page covers what Stonn does in the game, where he came from in canon, and how to use him on a ship.

Star Trek background

Stonn is a Vulcan introduced in the original series episode “Amok Time,” which first aired in September 1967. Theodore Sturgeon wrote the script and Joseph Pevney directed. The episode opens the second season and introduces a lot of what fans now treat as standard Vulcan culture: pon farr, the koon-ut-kal-if-fee ritual, and the lirpa.

In the story, Spock has been bonded to T'Pring since childhood. When his pon farr drives him back to Vulcan for the ceremony, T’Pring uses her right to claim kal-if-fee and forces a duel, naming Captain Kirk as the challenger. She would rather pair with Stonn, the Vulcan standing quietly beside her. Stonn does not fight. He waits. After Spock survives the ritual and steps aside, T’Pring and Stonn pair off. Spock’s closing line to Stonn is the famous one: “having is not so pleasing a thing after all as wanting.”

The original script described Stonn as “a tall muscular Vulcan with a handsome and non-horrifying face” and pinned the pronunciation as “Stahn.” He has little dialogue in the episode and never appears on screen again. Star Trek Fleet Befehl fills in the canon gap with its own flavor text: Stonn is a Vulcan geologist and surveyor. That is why the game slots him onto the mining crew rather than into a Wissenschaft or command role.

Stonn’s role in STFC

Stonn lives in the economy half of the officer pool. He is not built for combat, hostile farming, or station defense. The game classifies him as Engineering class, Rare rarity, Neutral faction, and groups him with the rest of the Surveyors and Miners (T’Pring, Pan, Ten of Eleven, Mae Darwin, and the other mining-focused officers).

His captain seat is a mining-rate boost, and his bridge seat is a cargo-size boost. Both are passive bonuses; you do not have to activate anything. He stays on the ship and the bonuses apply for as long as the crew is set, which makes him a fit-and-forget addition to mining ships you assign to nodes for hours at a time.

For the tier-list question: Stonn is not the headline mining officer today, and he was not the top of the meta back in 2019 either. Ceiling crews lean on newer officers from Surveyors and Miners and other groups. What Stonn offers is reliability and accessibility at a Rare-officer cost.

Stonn’s abilities

Captain ability: Ore Miner

Ore Miner increases the ship’s Ore mining rate when Stonn is in the captain seat. The value is +40% at rank 1, current as of the latest game Daten. The bonus applies only when the ship is mining an Ore node, not Gas, Crystal, or Tritanium.

The per-rank progression on this ability is not published consistently across reliable sources, so this guide does not include a per-rank table for the captain bonus. In practice, treat the captain ability as a mining-rate boost on Ore nodes and check the in-game officer card after promotions if you want the exact rank-by-rank number.

Officer ability: Pack Rat

Pack Rat increases the ship’s cargo size when Stonn is on the bridge in either of the two officer seats. The bonus scales with promotion in clean steps. Numbers below are current as of the latest game data.

Cargo size by rank:

Rang

Cargo size bonus

1

+20%

2

+25%

3

+30%

4

+35%

5

+40%

Pack Rat applies to total cargo capacity, not protected cargo. If you want protected-cargo bonuses for things like the Ferengi events, that is a different officer slot.

Where Stonn shines

Three situations cover most of his use.

Early-game Ore mining. New commanders who want a cheap Rare Ore captain can pair Stonn with synergy officers on a mining ship like the Mayflower or a Horizon and pick up a meaningful boost over uncommon-only crews. The shard cost to reach a useful rank is low compared with most Rare officers.

Cargo padding on long mining runs. Pack Rat lets a ship hold more material before it has to return to station. That cuts the number of trips on Ore runs and on any long mining session where the cargo limit, not the mining rate, is what ends the trip. He works on the bridge of mining-focused ships regardless of which captain you pick.

Background filler for crews that need an Technik body. Some crew compositions need an Engineering officer to round out a class makeup without spending one of your top seats. Stonn fills that role cheaply.

How to get Stonn

Stonn’s shards have been available through a mix of in-game systems over the years: Premium, Standard, and Ultra Officer Chests; mission-chain rewards; and faction or event store rotations. Older guides linked him to the Precious Materials mission line, and his shards have shown up in milestone rewards from time to time.

None of that is a guaranteed current source. Officer-acquisition paths shift with patches and event cycles, so check the current store and event rotations in your build of the game. If a daily or weekly event is offering Stonn shards in any meaningful quantity, that is the cheapest path to rank him up. Otherwise, chest pulls accumulate him slowly over time without a targeted grind.

Crew synergies

Stonn is Engineering class with a synergy profile of 30% Command, 20% Engineering, and 30% Science. The 20% Engineering value is the lowest of the three, which is unusual: he gives back more when paired with Command or Science bridge officers than with another Engineering officer. Useful pairings:

Stonn as captain plus a Command-class or Science-class officer on the bridge to capture the higher synergy values.

Stonn on the bridge under a different mining captain. T’Pring works for Gas, for example, and other mining-rate captains exist for Kristall. His Pack Rat cargo bonus stacks with whichever captain ability is active because they affect different ship stats.

Stonn next to other Surveyors and Miners officers when you are building a fully mining-themed crew. Group bonuses, where the game offers them, reward stacking same-group officers.

He does not fit combat or armada crews. His ability set is purely economic.

Frequently asked questions

Is Stonn worth ranking up?

For most accounts, yes, at least to rank 3 or rank 4. Pack Rat is the reason. Going from rank 1 to rank 5 takes the cargo bonus from +20% to +40% on the ship, which is a meaningful increase over a typical Ore run. Going all the way to rank 5 takes a larger shard pile and is worth it if you do a lot of Ore mining or you use Stonn as a regular bridge officer on cargo-limited mining runs.

What ship is Stonn best on?

Any mining ship you have access to, paired with the right captain. Early on, that often means a Horizon, a Mayflower, or whichever explorer or survey ship your faction track gave you. Larger mining-capable ships benefit from Pack Rat the same way smaller ones do, because the cargo bonus is a percentage and scales with the ship’s base cargo number.

Where do you get Stonn shards?

Officer chests are the most reliable long-term source. Premium and Ultra chests carry the best per-pull odds for Rare officers in general. Event and faction stores have offered Stonn shards in the past; check your current rotations. Mission-chain rewards have included his shards before, but those are one-time pickups, not a renewable source.

Does Stonn’s captain bonus stack with other mining buffs?

Captain abilities do not stack with each other, since only one officer occupies the captain seat. Stonn’s Ore mining rate boost does combine with bridge officer abilities and with mining-related research-tree bonuses, because those come from different sources.

Does Stonn work for Gas, Crystal, or Tritanium?

No. His captain ability is Ore-specific. For Gas, T’Pring is the classic captain pick in the same officer group. For Crystal, look at officers with crystal-specific captain bonuses. Pack Rat, on the other hand, works regardless of what the ship is mining, so Stonn can still pull weight on the bridge of a Gas or Crystal mining ship.

Should you chase Stonn?

Stonn is a low-priority recruit and a high-value supporting officer. Do not burn premium currency chasing him on day one. Pick him up through normal chest pulls and event rotations, take him to rank 3 or 4 once you have the shards, and let him ride along on your mining ships for as long as you mine Ore or care about cargo capacity. If you eventually replace him at the top of an Ore mining crew with a newer officer, his Pack Rat seat still earns its keep on the bridge.

[89
133,127,125,126
post-6246","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-officers","tag-engineering-class-officers","tag-neutral-faction-officers","tag-rare-officers","tag-surveyors-miners-officer-group
["GET
