He sits in the Command class, runs to a max rank of 5, and shows up on Klingon-flavored combat crews while a new commander is still grinding through faction Missionen and hostiles.

His captain ability is Hot Pursuit, which adds 25% to ship Impulse Speed. His officer ability, Critical Strike, raises Critical Hit Damage when he sits anywhere on the bridge. Together those bonuses point him at a clear job: get into range fast, then hit hard when the damage rolls trigger a critical.

None of his numbers will carry a player into late-game PvP, but for the first few weeks of a new account he earns his slot. The rest of this guide covers his canon background, where the abilities actually help, and how he fits with the rest of the Glory in the Kill group.

Star Trek background

In canon Trek, Klaa is a 23rd-century Klingon starship commander introduced in the 1989 film Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, set in 2287. He commands a Klingon Bird-of-Prey with his first officer Vixis, who is also a separate officer in STFC.

The film paints him as a young, glory-hungry captain who is bored of routine patrol work. He blows up the abandoned Earth probe Pioneer 10 for target practice, dismisses the kill as no real test of a warrior, and then sets a course for Nimbus III specifically to hunt Captain Kirk. His logic in the movie is direct: defeating Kirk would make him the most feared warrior in the galaxy.

The pursuit ends when General Korrd orders him to stand down and publicly state that the attack on the Unternehmen was not authorized. Klaa was played by Todd Bryant, and the in-game flavor text describing him as a young and impetuous lieutenant tracks closely to that screen portrayal.

Role in STFC

Inside the game, Klaa is a Klingon Empire officer with the Command class and the Glory in the Kill group tag. He fits naturally on combat-leaning ships where the captain’s job is closing the gap on a target, since extra Impulse Speed shortens the time before a battleship or interceptor gets into firing range.

His officer ability is a flat Critical Hit Damage buff, so he plays well on PvE crews that already have a way to generate critical hits. He is not a mining officer, a refit builder, or an armada specialist. The full toolkit is combat, and it is combat tuned for early Klingon-space content.

For a new commander, that translates into clearing hostiles, working through the Klingonenfraktion reputation grind, and pushing into early-game PvE missions. By the time he is fully ranked, most accounts already have access to stronger Klingon crews, so he tends to move to the bench rather than off the roster.

Captain ability and officer ability

Klaa’s captain ability is Hot Pursuit. It increases the ship’s Impulse Speed by 25% when he sits in the captain’s chair. Hot Pursuit is treated as a single fixed bonus rather than a per-rank table, so the 25% figure is the value to plan around at any rank. The bonus applies in combat and out of combat, which is why he ends up on cruisers and Schlachtschiffe used for chasing ships across a system rather than on stations.

His officer ability is Critical Strike. When Klaa is on the bridge but not the captain, the ship’s Critical Hit Damage goes up. This one does scale with rank promotion, and the per-rank progression is the part of his kit worth planning around. The values below are current as of the latest game Daten.

Rang

Schadensbonus bei kritischen Treffern

1

+8%

2

+10%

3

+13%

4

+17%

5

+20%

The jump from rank 4 to rank 5 is only a few percentage points, so taking him to max purely for the crit damage is a judgment call. Most players who rank him fully do it for the Glory in the Kill group synergy rather than the individual ability.

Where Klaa shines

Three situations actually call for Klaa on the bridge:

Early-game hostile grinding in Klingon space. The Critical Strike officer ability stacks neatly with any captain who generates crits, and Hot Pursuit speeds up the loop from one hostile to the next.

Faction reputation grinding for the Klingon Empire. Glory in the Kill is built for this kind of work, and Klaa is usually the cheapest captain in the group to rank up first.

Filling out an Uncommon combat crew when better Offiziere are not yet recruited. He buys time while the account works toward stronger Klingon-faction options.

Where he does not shine: serious mid-game PvP, station defense crews that lean on shield or armor officers, mining, and any armada role that demands top-tier specialists.

How to get Klaa

Klaa is an Uncommon officer, which puts his shard sources in the usual Uncommon pools: recruit tokens, Klingon faction store offerings when they rotate in, and seasonal events that include him as a reward track entry. He needs 14 shards for rank 1 and another 42, 98, 196, and 378 shards for the remaining ranks, for a total of 728 shards from recruit through rank 5, current as of the latest game data.

The shard count is light by mid-game standards, so most players unlock him without doing anything specific. For active shard farming, check the current store and event rotations rather than relying on a fixed source, since Scopely shifts those regularly.

Synergies

The captain seat picks up extra synergy bonuses depending on the class of the officers sitting on the bridge with Klaa. Pairing him with Command-class officers adds 3%, Engineering officers add 5%, and Science officers add 5%. The Engineering and Science slots are slightly more valuable on his crew than another Command body for that reason.

His most natural crewmates come from the Glory in the Kill group, where stacked group bonuses turn a modest Uncommon captain into a usable early Klingon-space crew. He also fits behind any Klingon captain who needs a flat Critical Hit Damage line on the bridge while a higher-rarity officer takes the captain seat.

The pairing the game’s own flavor text hints at is Klaa with Kras, his strategist, and Vixis, his first officer in the film. All three sit in the same Klingon early-officer pool, so the crew is approachable for a new account.

Frequently asked questions

Is Klaa any good in STFC?

For an Uncommon officer used in the first month of play, yes. He is a serviceable Klingon combat officer with a useful crit-damage line and a speed boost in the captain’s chair. By mid-game his slot usually goes to a stronger Klingon-faction captain.

Where do you get Klaa shards?

Through general Uncommon shard sources: recruit tokens, the Klingon faction store when his shards appear, and seasonal event reward tracks. Specific availability changes with each event cycle, so check what is in rotation when you are actively farming.

What ship is Klaa best on?

Any Klingon-faction combat ship that wants more impulse speed and more crit damage. Bird-of-Prey style hulls and other early Klingon hostile hunters are the obvious fit. He is not a battleship-only or interceptor-only officer; the kit is general enough to ride on whatever combat hull you are flying in Klingon space.

Is Klaa worth ranking up to max?

For the Glory in the Kill group bonus, usually yes, since his shard cost is low and the group synergy is the main payoff. For the individual Critical Strike ability alone, the rank 4 to rank 5 jump is only a few percentage points, so a budget-conscious account can stop earlier without losing much.

Who pairs well with Klaa on a bridge?

Officers from the Glory in the Kill group give the cleanest synergy bonus. Outside that, any Klingon captain who already generates critical hits benefits from Klaa’s Critical Strike buff in an officer slot. Engineering and Science class officers also feed slightly higher synergy than Command-class crewmates.

Bottom line

Klaa is an early-game Klingon officer with a clean job: speed up the chase, then push critical hits when the shots land. He earns his place on a new commander’s first real Klingon crew, then steps aside when stronger options arrive. If you are starting an account or rebuilding a Klingon roster on the cheap, he is worth recruiting and ranking through to at least rank 3 before deciding how far past that to push him.

[89
116,142,124,120
post-6174","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-officers","tag-command-class-officers","tag-glory-in-the-kill-officer-group","tag-klingon-faction-officers","tag-uncommon-officers
["GET
