He runs in the Klingon Patriots officer group, an attack-oriented set focused on bigger crits and faster fights.

If your bridge already includes Gorkon, Kerla is the next officer you slot. Gorkon hands you the critical hit chance, Kerla amplifies the damage when those crits land, and the pair carries a lot of early-game PvP and base-breaking matchups against Klingon and mixed-faction targets.

This guide covers who Kerla is in canon, what his abilities actually do in the current game, the ships and crews he fits, and how to think about ranking him up.

Star Trek background

Kerla, often credited as Brigadier Kerla, is a Klingon Defense Force officer from Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991), played by Paul Rossilli. By 2293 he had risen to the rank of Brigadier General and was serving as military adviser to Chancellor Gorkon.

He was aboard the Klingon battlecruiser Kronos One when Gorkon was assassinated, then stayed on as adviser to Chancellor Azetbur after she took the chancellorship. In that second role he was an outspoken hawk, pushing for war with the Föderation while it was still capable of being beaten back.

He travels with Azetbur to the Khitomer conference, where his on-screen arc shifts from hardline adviser to protector: during the assassination attempt on the Federation president, he is part of the group keeping Azetbur safe.

STFC drops him into the Klingon Patriots officer group alongside Gorkon, Chang, Azetbur, Koth, Woteln, and M’Ral. The grouping tracks the film: the same cabal of Klingon hawks, recast in-game as a kinetic-damage crew.

Role in STFC

Kerla is a kinetic damage officer. Specifically, he raises Critical Hit Damage when the ship is firing a Kinetic Weapon. He does nothing for ships using Energy weapons, so the first question to ask before slotting him is “what does this ship shoot with?”

His preferred ship class is the Interceptor. Interceptors are kinetic-leaning and built for short, high-burst fights, which is exactly the engagement profile the Klingon Patriots crew wants. He also works on Battleships that fire kinetic weapons, with the Bortas and Kumari as the cleanest examples. He is not the right fit on energy-firing battleships like the Intrepid or Legionary.

His captain ability swings toward survivability after the opening burst, while his officer (bridge) ability is pure offense. The bridge ability is the reason to bring him; the captain seat is a backup option when Gorkon is not available.

Captain ability and officer ability

Kerla carries one captain ability and one bridge ability. Both lean offensive, both reward fights that end fast.

Captain ability: Evasive Maneuvers

When the ship’s shields are depleted during battle, Evasive Maneuvers boosts the ship’s Dodge by 50% (as of the latest Daten). The intent is survivability after the opening burst: once shields are down, the ship becomes harder to hit, which buys the crew more rounds to keep firing.

In practice this captain ability is usually a tradeoff. Gorkon is the more gemeinsame captain for Klingon Patriots crews, because Gorkon supplies the offensive crit chance the group is built around. Kerla goes on the bridge as the second seat. If you do put Kerla in the captain chair, expect him to be a stopgap rather than a long-term solution; the bigger value is on the bridge.

Officer ability: Attack Maneuvers

Attack Maneuvers increases Critical Hit Damage when the ship fires with a Kinetic Weapon. The bonus rises with each rank promotion. The per-rank progression has held steady across game updates, so the table below is current as of the latest data.

Rang

Critical hit damage bonus

1

+20%

2

+25%

3

+30%

4

+40%

5

+50%

This is the main reason to use Kerla. A +50% multiplier on every kinetic critical hit at rank 5 is a meaningful damage swing in any fight where you are already landing crits, and it stacks on top of any other crit damage bonuses the rest of the bridge brings.

The promotion priority is straightforward: take him up the ranks as fast as your shard supply allows. Each rank is a flat increase to the same bonus, and the ceiling is double the rank 1 value.

Where Kerla shines

Three clear use cases stand out.

Interceptor PvP

Gorkon as captain with Kerla and a third Klingon Patriot, usually Harrison or Koth, dumps a lot of damage in the opening rounds. The Gorkon crit chance window plus Kerla’s crit damage means those early hits matter more, which is exactly what a kinetic Interceptor wants. The ship may not survive a long fight, but a short, sharp engagement is its happy place.

Base breaking

The same Gorkon-captain Klingon Patriots bridge works against player stations, on either an Interceptor or a kinetic Battleship outside the Intrepid or Legionary. Shots one and two are usually enough to make the run worthwhile, even if the ship is destroyed shortly after.

Battleship kinetic burst

On a Bortas or Kumari, where the big kinetic weapon fires in the first two rounds of combat, a Gorkon plus Kerla plus Koth bridge stacks crit chance and crit damage on the rounds that matter most. Skip this configuration on energy-firing battleships; the kinetic bonus is wasted there.

How to get Kerla

Kerla shards are tied to the Combat Training mission chain in early-game Klingon space, plus mission rewards along that storyline. He also appears periodically in faction store offers and event reward tracks. Check the current store and event rotations for the most reliable path, since availability shifts over time.

Promotion priority should match how you actually use him. The biggest single gain is taking Attack Maneuvers from rank 1 to rank 5, because it more than doubles the kinetic crit damage bonus he carries onto the bridge. The captain rank-ups matter less unless you specifically plan to seat him as captain.

Synergies and crew building

Kerla is a bridge officer in a captain-led crew. The synergy bonuses Kerla brings to the captain seat skew toward Command and Science class Offiziere, with a smaller Engineering bonus. That matches how he is actually used: a Command-class captain like Gorkon picks up the larger synergy when Kerla sits behind him.

The natural pairings are the rest of the Klingon Patriots. Gorkon is the captain in almost every meaningful Kerla crew, since he provides the critical hit chance Kerla amplifies. Koth layers more kinetic damage when Hull Breach is active. Khan adds critical chance every time the ship is hit, which works well against bigger targets that trade hits with you. Harrison is the safer third when you want a general-purpose Klingon kinetic crew.

For players short on epics, M’Ral as captain with Woteln and Kerla is a serviceable kinetic Interceptor crew that uses only Rare officers. It will not match the Gorkon-led version, but it gets the kinetic-crit identity working before your roster fills out.

Frequently asked questions

Is Kerla worth ranking up?

For any player building a Klingon kinetic Interceptor or kinetic Battleship crew, yes. The promotions buy real damage on every kinetic crit, and Kerla’s shard cost is rare-tier rather than epic. For energy-leaning fleets, he is a low priority and can sit at rank 1 until the roster shifts.

Where do you get Kerla shards?

The main route is the Combat Training mission chain in early Klingon space. He also rotates through faction store offers and event reward tracks, so the answer can shift week to week. Check the current store and event rotations for the most reliable path right now.

What ship is Kerla best on?

His preferred class is the Interceptor. He also fits kinetic Battleships such as the Bortas or Kumari. Avoid putting him on energy-firing ships; his bridge ability does nothing for them.

Does Kerla work without Gorkon?

He still adds crit damage to any kinetic ship’s bridge, so the slot has standalone value. The Gorkon-plus-Kerla combination is where his usefulness peaks, though, because Gorkon supplies the critical hit chance that Kerla’s bonus multiplies.

Is Kerla good in armadas?

Kerla’s value is built around fast kinetic engagements, so he can appear in some Klingon armada crews on Interceptors where the same Gorkon-Kerla core kicks off the damage. For Borg-specific content the meta usually pivots to Borg-counter officers; Kerla is not a featured pick there. Use him when the crew is already kinetic and the fight ends quickly.

Should you chase Kerla?

If you are playing Klingon and your bridge is built around Gorkon, Kerla is the second seat and worth taking to rank 5 for the kinetic crit damage. If you are playing a Federation or Romulanisch path, or your fleet is energy-leaning, treat him as a long-term project rather than a current priority. He is one of those rare officers whose ceiling is high if the rest of your crew is the right shape, and very modest if it is not.

[89
133,124,123,125
post-6169","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-officers","tag-engineering-class-officers","tag-klingon-faction-officers","tag-klingon-patriots-officer-group","tag-rare-officers
["GET
