When an attacker gets past your defending ships, the platforms sit behind them and add fire support. There are six of them, lettered A through F, and they all work the same way. Platform A is available from the start, while B through F unlock as you complete the Defense Platforms research. Every platform upgrades to level 80. If you spend real time in station combat or hold ground other players want, they earn their spot.

When each Defense Platform unlocks

All six platforms share one function and one maximum level. A newer station with only the first rank has Platform A and B; a player who has poured five ranks into Defense Platforms fields all six. There is no shortcut around the research, so if you want a fuller wall of platforms, that track has to move.

What Defense Platforms do

Defense Platforms protect your station from other players’ attacks. In a station battle your defending ships take the fight first, and the platforms provide extra fire behind them. Upgrading a platform raises its combat performance, so the more levels you put in, the more it contributes when someone attacks.

Each platform carries a power level that climbs one step per upgrade. A level 1 platform sits at power level 1, a level 40 platform at 40, and a fully built level 80 platform at 80. Because all six variants share the same values, six platforms at the same level all add the same amount. Stacking every letter and keeping them close in level is how the platforms turn from a token defense into a wall an attacker has to grind through.

They matter most in the moments your ships alone would lose. A defender who is outgunned in the air can still make an attack expensive if the platforms behind the ships are built up. If you never lose a station battle on ships alone, the platforms do little; if you trade blows with players near your own strength, the extra fire changes outcomes.

Upgrade costs and build times

The table below uses milestone levels from Defense Platform A. The variants are the same building, so their outputs match exactly at every level. Their upgrade costs and build times are close but not identical letter to letter, so treat these figures as representative rather than a promise for B through F.

Ebene

Kosten

Build time

Requires

1

Keine

Instant

Keine

5

350 Tritanium, 7,750 Parsteel

15m

R&D Department 13, Drydock A 3

10

300 Tritanium, 12,500 Parsteel

1h 55m

Drydock A 10

20

8,500 Tritanium, 289,000 Parsteel, 850 Dilithium

1d 8h

Drydock A 20, Defense Technologies 20

30

780,000 Tritanium, 26.52M Parsteel, 78,000 Dilithium, 45 3★ Uncommon Refined Gas

3d 10h

Drydock A 30, Defense Technologies 30

40

60.2M Tritanium, 5.731B Parsteel, 6.02M Dilithium, 12,000 4★ Common Refined Gas, 1,400 4★ Uncommon Refined Gas

56d 13h

Drydock A 40

50

3.675B Tritanium, 249.9B Parsteel, 367.5M Dilithium

968d 10h

Drydock A 50

60

492.5B Tritanium, 80.38T Parsteel, 49.25B Dilithium, 39,100 5★ Uncommon Refined Gas, 15,300 5★ Rare Refined Gas

2040d 9h

Drydock A 60

70

1.587M Σ-Tritanium, 53.94M Σ-Parsteel, 158,650 Σ-Dilithium, 189,000 6★ Uncommon Refined Gas, 822,150 6★ Common Refined Ore

538d 4h

Drydock A 70

80

193.6M Σ-Tritanium, 26.33B Σ-Parsteel, 19.36M Σ-Dilithium, 1.724M 7★ Uncommon Refined Gas, 11.75M 7★ Common Refined Ore

12990d 12h

Drydock A 80

Taking a single platform from level 1 to 80 runs to about 1.381T Tritanium, 228.3T Parsteel, and 138.1B Dilithium, on top of large piles of refined gas, refined ore, and Sigma resources at the top tiers. The unboosted build time for that full climb adds up to roughly 71,164 days, so nobody reaches level 80 without speedups and a lot of patience. The early levels are cheap and fast by comparison, with the first handful costing only hundreds of Tritanium and finishing in minutes, so the opening ranks are easy protection to bank.

The letters drift apart in cost more than most families. Compared with Platform A, Platform B’s upgrade costs differ at 36 of the 80 levels, C at 26, D at 46, E at 39, and F at 61. The gaps are small at any single level, but they mean you should check the in-game figure for the exact platform you are upgrading rather than assuming it matches A to the resource.

How Defense Platforms fit your station

Platform A costs you nothing to unlock, so place it early and keep it moving alongside your other station upgrades. The other five wait on the Defense Platforms research, which means your defense scales with how much you invest in that research track rather than with your Operations level alone.

The upgrade requirements lean heavily on Drydock A, which gates almost every milestone from level 10 upward, with Defense Technologies stepping in around the level 20 to 45 band and the R&D Department needed for the early ranks. Keep those buildings moving if you want the platforms to keep pace. The costs and timers explode past level 50, where a single upgrade can demand billions of resources and years of unboosted build time, so most players hold their platforms in a range that matches their station level and combat needs instead of pushing every letter to the cap.

Because the six variants are identical, the practical play is width before depth. Six platforms at a moderate level give an attacker more to chew through than one platform pushed far ahead of the rest. When your resource income and your Drydock A level allow it, level the whole set together rather than racing one letter to the front.

Are Defense Platforms worth upgrading?

If your station gets attacked, yes. Defense Platforms add real fire support behind your defending ships and cost nothing to start with Platform A. The value depends on how often you actually fight on defense. Active station-combat and territory players should build all six and keep them near their station level, since width across the set does more for you than any one platform pushed far ahead. If you rarely get hit, a moderate investment is plenty, since the top levels demand resources and build times far out of proportion to the protection they add.

Defense Platforms are your station’s last line of defense in STFC.
