His job is simple: light the other side on fire with his Captain Maneuver and turn that Burning status into shields for your hull.<\/p>\n

In canon, Doctor Tolian Soran is the El-Aurian antagonist of Star Trek: Generations<\/em>, played by Malcolm McDowell. He was a scientist born sometime before 2071 who lost his wife Leandra, his children, and his entire homeworld in the Borg attack on El-Auria in the 23rd century. He survived only because Captain Scott pulled him off the SS Lakul<\/em> as the ship was torn apart by the energy ribbon known as the Nexus.<\/p>\n

Inside the Nexus, Soran briefly lived in a reality where his family was alive. When Commander Chekov sedated him in the Unternehmen<\/em>-B sickbay, he woke into a universe he no longer wanted any part of. He spent the next 78 years trying to engineer his way back. Soran is a PvP defense officer with a clear specialization. That makes him a counter pick, not a general-purpose captain. Against hostiles, armadas, or non-Explorer enemy ships, his Officer Ability sits dormant. His Captain Maneuver still has a chance to apply Burning, but the rest of his crew is the part doing the damage. If your alliance gets a lot of inbound Explorer attacks at your station, or if you spend time chasing player Explorers in deep space, he earns his slot quickly.<\/p>\n

Soran’s Captain Maneuver, Time is the Fire<\/strong>, gives him a chance at the start of each round against players to apply Burning to the enemy ship for the next round. That trigger turns on the rest of the squad’s effects. Without a captain who can apply Burning reliably, Miss Q and Romi sit in the back row doing nothing useful.<\/p>\n

His Officer Ability, Toothless Predator<\/strong>, is the payoff for the Burning trigger when the enemy is an Explorer. While facing a Burning Explorer in PvP, Soran gives your ship a substantial Apex Barrier (an absorbing layer on top of your shield hit points) for several rounds. The barrier value scales with promotion: a fully promoted Soran reads as a much bigger barrier than a green or uncommon promote, so saving shards to push him toward five stars pays off.<\/p>\n

One thing to keep in mind: the Officer Ability only activates against player Explorers carrying Burning. Against hostiles the seat is wasted. Against player Battleships or Interceptors the Apex Barrier does not fire. The mechanic is narrow on purpose.<\/p>\n

He is at his best in three situations.<\/p>\n

The first is defending your station. If your coordinates sit inside an active warzone, Soran captained on a Battleship parked at home discourages the average Explorer raider. The Burning chance keeps Miss Q and Romi active for chunks of the fight, and your barrier refills make you a much less attractive target.<\/p>\n

The second is a campaign against an opposing alliance that runs heavy Explorer setups. If you can see what hull type the other side flies most, slot the squad and roll out.<\/p>\n

The third is a deep-space hunt for player Explorer mining ships. Soran is not the captain for chasing miners themselves (the typical PvP miner crew is different), but on a battle ship covering the hunters, his barrier holds up better than most defense captains when retaliation arrives.<\/p>\n

What he is not: a Hostile killer, a PvE captain, or an armada anchor. Slotting him into PvE wastes his ability entirely.<\/p>\n

Soran is part of the Q Continuum Part 2 cycle (Update 73, released December 2024) and arrived as a squad release alongside Miss Q and Romi. Shards typically come through a mix of event recruit tokens, store rotations tied to the Retaliation arc, and the recurring premium recruit pool once the launch window closes.<\/p>\n

Miss Q’s Officer Ability boosts your Isolytic Cascade damage against Burning targets for the first few rounds. That makes her the offensive output piece on the squad while Soran is the defensive piece. Her Below Decks ability also feeds Apex Barrier when your ship has Morale, which stacks well with morale crews from older releases.<\/p>\n

Romi’s Officer Ability raises your Isolytic Defense against Burning targets, which means less Isolytic Cascade damage taken from the other side. Her Below Decks ability gives an extra barrier against Hull Breach attackers, so she has uses outside the pure Burning kit.<\/p>\n
