It unlocks through the Unlock Astronautics research and upgrades to level 80. Every level past the first adds to its Research Cost Efficiency buff, which lowers the base-resource cost of all your research. If you build ships and run a heavy research schedule, it is a quiet workhorse that sits at the front of your shipbuilding pipeline.

What the Astronautics Studio does

New ship hulls are researched and unlocked in the Astronautics Studio before they appear in the Shipyard. Any hull you want to build clears its research here first, so the studio gates the ships you can add to your fleet.

From level 2 the building carries one buff, Research Cost Efficiency, which raises the cost efficiency of all research paid in base resources. In plain terms, higher levels make your research cost fewer base resources. The buff climbs slowly through the early levels and then scales hard near the top of the range.

Building level

Research Cost Efficiency

2

3%

10

14%

20

36%

30

69%

40

111%

50

170%

60

245%

70

400%

80

875%

These values are current as of the latest game Daten.

How to unlock the Astronautics Studio

You place the Astronautics Studio by completing the Unlock Astronautics research at rank 1. The cumulative build time is 40,665 days and 8 hours unboosted, which is why almost nobody pushes this building to 80 without construction speedups, and it usually tracks a few levels behind Operations.

How the Astronautics Studio fits your station

The studio only matters as fast as you actually research hulls. When you are opening a new ship tier, you upgrade it to clear that hull’s research and then leave it until the next hull you want. Because every level from 5 up needs Operations and the R&D Department at the same level, the studio rarely blocks you on its own; those two buildings are already on most players’ upgrade lists.

The one time it steps forward is a hull you cannot build yet, where the missing piece is an Astronautics Studio level rather than a Shipyard level. Watch the two off-pattern gates too: level 30 also wants Engine Technology Lab 28, and level 75 wants Foundry 74, so a lagging support building can stall an upgrade you were counting on.

Is the Astronautics Studio worth upgrading?

Yes, but on demand rather than on a schedule. You need it at whatever level your next hull’s research requires, and the Research Cost Efficiency buff is a real payoff for anyone running base-resource research, reaching 875% at level 80. Past that point the late-game costs and multi-year build times mean you upgrade it when a hull or a research saving justifies the spend, not for its own sake.

The Astronautics Studio unlocks new ship hulls in STFC and makes research cheaper.
