The R&D Department is the station building that runs your research. It unlocks new ships, buildings, and supporting technologies, and every upgrade raises its Research Speed Bonus so research finishes faster. You place it once Betrieb<\/a> reaches level 4 and the Academy is built, and it upgrades all the way to level 80. If you plan to keep researching, it earns its slot early and stays useful for the life of your account.<\/p>\n

<\/span>What the R&D Department does<\/span><\/h2>\n

Research in Star Trek Fleet Befehl<\/a> happens through the research tree, and the R&D Department is the building that gates and speeds that work. The game describes it as the place where new ships, buildings, and supporting technologies are discovered. On its own it does not grant combat stats. Its value is one thing done well: the higher its level, the faster your research projects complete.<\/p>\n

The jump past level 60 is the part worth noticing. The bonus roughly doubles from level 60 to level 70 and more than doubles again by level 80, so the last stretch of the building is where the speed payoff is largest, even though it is also the most expensive.<\/p>\n

<\/span>How to unlock the R&D Department<\/span><\/h2>\n

To place the R&D Department at level 1 you need Operations at level 4 and the Academy built at level 1. Both are early-game buildings, so most commanders can slot the R&D Department in during their first playthrough of the starter systems. From there, each upgrade is gated by your Operations and Academy levels moving in step, with a few extra buildings called in at specific levels.<\/p>\n

Across all 80 levels the building costs about 137 trillion Parsteel and 207.2 billion Dilithium, plus large quantities of refined gas, refined crystal, and the Sigma resources that appear from level 65. The cumulative base build time is 101,663 days and 12 hours unboosted, which is why speedups and construction-time research matter so much on this building.<\/p>\n

One thing the raw numbers hide: the requirement columns show Operations and Academy climbing together at almost every level, so the R&D Department rarely holds you back on its own. It advances as fast as your core station does.<\/p>\n

<\/span>How the R&D Department fits your station<\/span><\/h2>\n

Treat the R&D Department as a background building you keep level with Operations rather than a project you rush on its own. Because its only output is research speed, upgrading it pays off when you have an active research queue, and it does little while the queue sits idle. The practical pattern for most commanders is to bump it whenever Operations unlocks the next tier, so your research keeps pace with the rest of your progression.<\/p>\n

The mid-game is where the requirement chain widens. Levels in the teens and twenties pull in the Raffinerie<\/a>, the Dilithium and Tritanium Warehouses, and a Dilithium Generator, so a stalled R&D upgrade is often a sign one of those support buildings needs attention first. From level 65 the costs shift to Sigma resources, which come from refining higher-star ores, so plan your refinery output before you commit to those upgrades.<\/p>\n

Yes, within reason. Faster research compounds across every tree you touch, so keeping the R&D Department near your Operations level is one of the steadier returns in the game. The early and mid levels are cheap relative to the speed they add.
